Gifts and Donations The University has recently received from local and overseas individuals and foundations the following gifts and donations in support of its programmes and projects : (1) From Banca Popolare di Bergamo ITL5,600,000 to provide two scholarships of ITL2,800,000 each for students studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Institute Universitario di Bergamo in Italy in 1996. (2) From Citibank, N.A.: a. HK$15,000 to provid e a university marketing award in 1995-96 for a team of two full-time undergraduate students in their penultimate year ; and b. HK$15,000 to the University to sponsor student activities in 1996-97. (3) From Deloitte T o u d ie Tohmats u a tuition-fee equivalent scholarship for an outstanding student annually from 1995-96. (4) From Hang Seng Bank Limited : a. HK$45,000 annually from 1995-96 to provide three scholarships of $15,000 each for full-time second-year students of the faculties of arts, education, and social science ; b. HK$200,000 for unspecified purpose t o be used at the vice-chancellor's discretion in 1995-96; and c. HK$2,493,729 as contributions to the University's Affinity Card Programme. (5) From Hong Kong Association of University Women annually to second-year female students of different faculties on a rotation basis : a. HK$ 1,000 to provide a scholarship ; and b. HK$ 1,000 to provide two book prizes of $500 each. (6) From Machiavelli Centra di Lingua e Cultura Italiana per Stranieri ITL9,250,000 to provide 25 awards of ITL370,000 each for students studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Machiavelli Centro in Florence, Italy, in 1996. (7) From The Overseas Alumni Association of the CUHK Inc.US$200 to provid e a scholarship for an outstanding student in 1995-96. (8) From Dr. Francis K. Pan HK$6,000 to provide a scholarship for a postgraduate student in 1995-96. (9) From Personnel Management Club HK$S,000 to provide a scholarship for a final-year student of business administration in 1995-96. (10) From Doctors Richard Charles and Esther Yewpic k Lee Charitable Foundation HK$122,350 to provide a scholarship for a full-time student of surgical sciences from China in 1995-96. (11) From Tsung Tsin Association : a. HK$100,000 to provide a number of scholarships for students majoring in anthropology and sociology in 1995-96; and b. HK$30,000 to the Department of Government and Public Administration to support a visit to Taiwan by its students in December 1995. (12) From Universita per Stranieri at Perugia ITL800,000 to enable a student studying Italian to attend a summer course at the Italian University for Foreigners in Perugia in 1996. (13) From Chiang Chin g Kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange: a. to the Research Centre for Translation a further donation of US$5,442.69 for the publication of Modern Times; b. to the Department of Anthropology i. a further donation of US$5,106.99 for the publication of Taiwan Studies : A Journal of Translation undertaken by Prof. Joseph Bosco ; ii. a further donation of US$19,697.58 to support the research project on the Mazu Temple undertaken by Prof. Joseph Bosco ; iii. a further donation of US$10,245.60 to support the research project on the food culture in Taiwan undertaken by Prof. David Wu; c. a further donation of US$27,359.49 to support the research project o n the traditional musicians in Shanxi, China, undertaken by Prof. Chien Chiao ; d. to the Department of Architecture a further donation of US$7,489.52 to support the research project on the oral architectural history of China undertaken by Prof. Tunney Lee ; e. to the Department of History a further donation of US$8,090.57 to support the comparative study of Chinese and world history undertaken by Prof. Leung Yuen-sang ; f. to the Department of Music a further donation ofUS$10,836.64 to support the comparative study of Taoist music undertaken by Prof. Tsao Pen- yeh ; and g. a further donation of US$20,002.37 to support the conference on the application of social sciences and Chinese modernization organized by Prof. Rance Lee in Hong Kong and Taiwan in June 1996. (14) From Merck Sharp & Dohme (Asia) Limited: a. to the Department of Medicine i . HK$50,000 to cover the editorial expenses of the Textbook of Clinical Medicine for South East Asia; ii. US$27,000 to support a research study jointly undertaken with the Department of Clinical Pharmacology; and b. to the Department of Microbiology HK$11,763.66 to sponsor a staff member to attend a conference on antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy in San Francisco, USA, in September 1995.
