Physical-layer Network Coding: From Theory to Practice

Abstract

Since the publication of our group's first paper on physical-layer network coding (PNC) in ACM Mobicom 2006, it has developed into a subfield of network coding with a wide following (i.e., more than 1,000 citations according to Google Scholar).

In this talk, I will give a quick introduction to PNC. After that, I will overview how I chose and tackled my Ph.D. research topic under Prof. Soung-Chang Liew's supervision when I was an IE graduate student (2007--2012). I will narrate our story on why thinking differently is sometimes a good thing (e.g., from synchronous to asynchronous PNC); and how we look for differentiations in the crowded research landscape of PNC (e.g., from theory to PNC implementation). I will end with our current exciting research and the research going forward, including our efforts in applying PNC in non-relay networks (while most, if not all, prior studies of PNC focused on its use in relay networks).

Biography:
Dr. Lu Lu received his B.E. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in 2007 and 2012, respectively. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Network Coding, CUHK. At CUHK, he received the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award and the Postgraduate Research Output Award both in 2013. His current research interests include wireless communication in 802.11 networks, multi-user detection, physical-layer network coding, and software-defined radios.
