B.Eng. in Artificial Intelligence – Systems & Technologies (AISTN)

The Artificial Intelligence - Systems & Technologies (AISTN) programme was formally established in 2019. It is the 1st Bachelor of Engineering programme in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Hong Kong.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an emerging engineering discipline that focuses on the technological innovations in enabling computing systems to behave and discover new knowledge with human-like intelligence. It is a broad area that covers many specializations, such as machine learning, deep learning, knowledge representation/inference, large scale computing systems and distributed systems, logic/constraint programming, human-computer interactions, natural language processing, big data analytics, etc. It has evolved in multiple disciplines, such as finance, medicine, manufacturing, robotics, multimedia, telecommunications, computational linguistics, etc., and there is now a huge demand of AI specialists in both local and global employment markets. On the other hand, there are critical challenges on how to innovate and design solid and rigorous solutions for AI, as well as how to properly address the ethical and societal issues with AI.

The AISTN programme is designed to meet today's tremendous need of well-trained talents in AI and related specializations. It aims to equip students with the capabilities of designing and implementing AI systems and technologies that can analyze, reason, and infer knowledge from massive information, backed by rigorous foundations of mathematics, basic sciences, data structures, statistics, algorithms, distributed computing, etc. Such capabilities enable students to develop cutting-edge AI solutions that are of practical interest to academia, industry and society.

The AISTN curriculum emphasizes on equipping students with the following capabilities:

  • Reasoning about and inferring knowledge of massive information;
  • Mastering hardware/software primitives for building AI applications, including mathematical modelling, data structures, statistics, algorithms, and distributed computing;
  • Designing and implementing AI applications that can analyze and process data at scale;
  • Applying AI in various disciplines such as finance, medicine, manufacturing, robotics, multimedia, telecommunications, computing linguistics, etc.;
  • Developing research skill sets for making cutting-edge innovations in AI;
  • Considering reliability, safety, privacy, and security issues of AI applications; and
  • Understanding the ethical and societal impacts of AI in human life.

Four optional specialized streams are offered for students:

  • Biomedical Intelligence
  • Intelligent Multimedia Processing
  • Large-scale Artificial Intelligence - Theory and Systems
  • Intelligent Manufacturing and Robotics

Applicants wishing to pursue the programme should apply to JS4468 / AISTN directly.

Applicants seeking admission on the strength of HKDSE examination results should submit their applications via JUPAS. Admission is based on the Best 5 HKDSE subject results with subject weighting applied.

Admission RequirementMinimum LevelSubject Weighting
English41.25
Chinese31.25
Mathematics5^1.75
Liberal Studies31
Two Elective Subjects3#

^ Applicants with level 4 in Mathematics (Compulsory Part) and good results in other HKDSE subjects will be exceptionally considered on a case-by-case basis.

# The programme accepts any subject as elective. The preferred subjects include Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2, Information and Communication Technology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science.

Subject weighting of "1.75" is given to the Mathematics Extended Module 1 or 2; "1.5" is given to the other preferred subjects; and "1" is given to any other subjects.

In addition to the requirements above, bonus points will be awarded to the 6th and 7th subjects, if any.

Local applicants with other qualifications can apply through the “non-JUPAS admission” scheme. These qualifications include Associate Degree/Higher Diploma, HKALE, GCE, IB, SAT/AP and other overseas qualifications for university admission. Please visit Local Admission Requirement of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more details.

International applicants who require a student visa to study in Hong Kong can apply through the “International Students Admissions Scheme”. The applicants must possess relevant high-school or post-secondary qualifications, e.g., GCE-AL, IB, SAT/AP (USA), GSAT (Taiwan), OSSD (Canada), and ATAR (Australia). Please visit Oversea Admission Requirement of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid for more details.

For both schemes, applicants will be considered on the basis of their education background and academic achievements. To make the applications more competitive, applicants are expected to demonstrate outstanding abilities in English, mathematics and science subjects.

Depending on students’ financial situation, or their outstanding performance in academic or other areas, the Government and the University may provide various scholarships and financial aid schemes to support the student’s learning in CUHK.
