Lee Shiu Summer Programme

The four-week tri-city Lee Shiu Summer Programme 2016, an international exploration leadership and cultural exchange programme, was completed in August. The programme was organized by Chung Chi College, in collaboration with the University Scholars Programme of the National University of Singapore and Yuanpei College of Peking University. It attracted over 70 students from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Singapore and the United States. Participants explored three major Asian cities - Hong Kong, Singapore and Beijing - between 11 July and 6 August. With the theme of “Road to Success in the Modern World”, the participants probed into problems in contemporary societies, while pondering on the notion of and ways to success by exploration, and learning and intercultural activities. Their f­indings were reported in the Lee Shiu Young Leaders Forum on the last day of the programme. The ten mentors during the HK programme were Mr. Jimmy Chiu (Management), Dr. Cynthia Hou (Hotel and Tourism Management), Dr. Willmann Liang (Biomedical Sciences), Dr. Lo Hau Man (Music), Professor Kathy Lui (Chemical Pathology), Dr. Doris Wong (Nursing), Dr. Yan Wai Hin (Economics), Professor Jason Yeh (Finance), Dr. Linda Yung (Economics) and Professor Mary Zhou (Social Work). The Lee Shiu Summer Programme 2016 is coordinated and managed by Dr. Ian Chow from College General Education Office.

Service-Learning Programme (Local)

Chung Chi students conducted story telling activity to children with special needs

 

The Service-Learning Programme (Local) was held from early June to early September. A total of 19 College students from various departments, divided into ­five teams, planned and served different groups for approximately six weeks to three months. Service targets included children with developmental delay or behavioral/ emotional problems; rehabilitated substance abusers; outreaching youths; secondary school students and the elderly respectively. Through the service experience, participants deepened their understanding towards the socially disadvantaged groups and gained insights into various social issues. Designed to be part of the College General Education course GECC4130 Senior Seminar, students will give group presentations and hand in written reports on their service and learning in formal classes.

 


Service-Learning Programme (Mainland)

This year, a total of 19 Chung Chi students from various departments engaged in the Service-Learning Programme (Mainland) led by Dr. Li Chun Hong, Lecturer of the Office of University General Education. The team went to Yunnan during 1 to 22 July to conduct a three-week programme focusing on early childhood education service with the theme of “Play-based Learning”. In this programme, Chung Chi students deepened their understanding on the people and culture in the Mainland. In addition, they got an invaluable chance to gain insights into various social issues. Designed to be part of the College General Education course GECC4130 Senior Seminar, students will give group presentations and hand in written reports on their service and learning in formal classes.

Students conducted service in Japan, serving the community by assisting agricultural work

 

The College organized the Service-Learning Programme (International) this summer in collaboration with Petra Christian University of Indonesia, International Christian University of Japan, Seoul Woman’s University of Korea and Taipei Medical University of Taiwan. A total of 12 Chung Chi students were sent overseas to join the service-learning projects coordinated by the partner institutes, while 10 students from those institutes in Japan, Korea and Taiwan came to Hong Kong to serve at various local service agencies under the co-ordination of the College. Chung Chi students going abroad were given the opportunity to apply their knowledge to serve overseas local communities. Through interacting with other international students, participants further developed both their communication skills and global perspective.

 


Summer Study Abroad Programme

A total of 71 Chung Chi students joined the Summer Study Abroad Programme 2016. They attended summer schools for two to eight weeks between late May and late August at 11 renowned universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and Mainland China, namely, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Los Angeles, Harvard University, Yale University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, the University of London (London School of Economics and Political Science and Imperial College London), the University of British Columbia, the University of New South Wales and Peking University. Students gained intellectual knowledge through various courses and got a taste of the foreign academic atmosphere at these world-class universities. They also experienced the foreign culture and met new friends of different nationalities. Chung Chi and CUHK alumni at Berkeley have again kindly organized different gathering activities for students participating in the summer session at UC Berkeley.

Students joining the summer programme at UC Berkeley have met friends from different parts of the world. Some of them have even participated in the street music performance on the campus.

 

 

Root-seeking Trip to Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai

Root seeking Trip to Nanjing Suzhou and Shanghai

Visit to Soochow University

 

The Chaplain’s Office and the Chinese Christian Universities Alumni Association jointly organized a root-seeking study tour to Nanjing, Suzhou and Shanghai from 21 to 26 June 2016. A group of about 40 staff and students of the College, alumni of CUHK and other Christian universities, and members of the Chung Chi Chapel visited a number of institutions which were formerly Chinese Christian universities, including Nanjing University (former Private University of Nanking), Nanjing Normal University (former Ginling College) and Soochow University. The trip has deepened the participants’ knowledge of the College history.

 


Cross-culture Mission Trip to Thailand

A group of 13 Chung Chi students went to Bangkok, Thailand from 24 June to 1 July for a cross-culture mission trip organized by the Chaplain’s Office. Through joining the Thailand Tchoukball Association’s annual game, having cultural exchange with local university students, visiting and serving the villages, participants learnt Thai culture and religion from different aspects.

The Student Leadership Exchange Camp 2016, organized by the Federation of Chinese University and College Chaplaincies, was held at the Hong Kong Baptist University from 4 to 8 July 2016. Through seminars, workshops, excursion and service, about 50 participants from Hong Kong and Taiwan, including Chung Chi College, explored how to put faith to practice.

 


Language Study Abroad Programme

This summer, 50 sponsored students participated in four to ten week intensive English courses organized by the University of Washington, USA, the University of Waterloo, Canada and the University of Victoria, Canada. On top of classroom instruction, there were also different kinds of social and cultural activities for participants to learn more about the language and culture.

A total of 39 students went to Europe this summer for the German and French study trips. The German trip, which started on 5 June 2016, was led by Ms. Annette Frömel of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages and Dr. Lo Fai Hang of the School of Life Sciences. Apart from the German language courses in Mannheim, there was also a whole week of historical and cultural visits in Berlin. The French trip, beginning on 12 June 2016, was led by Mr. Raphaël Chiarelli also from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages and Dr. Brian Thompson of the Department of Music. Participants studied French in Bordeaux, the cradle of wine, and joined a number of horizon widening cultural activities there. In Paris, they visited various arts museums and monuments to get a better understanding of the French culture.

 


Study Trip: Exploration of Japanese Society

Four students went to Tokyo, Japan this summer to take part in the “Global Campus Asia Tokyo 2016 First Japan” programme for three weeks starting 6 June. They attended Japanese classes at Gakushuin University and joined a series of cultural activities to gain a better understanding of the Japanese society and cultures.

Cultural Exploration and Internship Programme in Shanghai

Cultural Exploration and Internship Programme in Shanghai
 

A total of 20 Chung Chi students joined the 2nd “Cultural Exploration and Internship Programme in Shanghai” co-organized by the College Mentor Programme Committee and CUHK Alumni Association in Shanghai from 15 May to 4 June. The first week of the study tour featured a series of visits to various business corporations in Shanghai, alumni talk, as well as ideas exchange with local university undergraduates to learn about the latest development of Shanghai. In the following two weeks, participants were attached to ten different companies of various industries, ranging from hotel, finance and investment, public relations, marketing research, insurance, IT, wholesaling to catering, etc. for internship through which they gained a better understanding of the business practice and culture of the mainland.

 


Student Visitor Programme with Lanzhou University

The seventh bilateral Student Visitor Programme between Chung Chi College and Lanzhou University took place this summer. Held from 18 to 27 July in Gansu and Qinghai and from 1 to 10 August in Hong Kong, the Programme was attended by a total of 28 student delegates. The theme of study was “Silk Road and Modern Civilization: Socio-cultural Study of Gansu, Qinghai and Hong Kong”, under which a series of lectures and visits to religious and cultural sites were arranged. Ms. Fong Wan from the Department of Japanese Studies served as the Academic Advisor of the Programme.

Outward Bound Training Programme

A total of 23 Chung Chi students, in two groups, joined the Outward Bound Training Programme in May this year. They attended a seven-day training course at the training base of the Outward Bound Hong Kong located at Wong Wan Chau, Sai Kung. Via various well-designed land and sea challenges, students gained the opportunity to enhance personal growth and creativity, and to develop different skills including problem-solving, interpersonal communication and leadership. At the end of the programme, each participant was awarded a certificate of achievement by the Outward Bound Hong Kong.
