Instruction of taking PHYS4420 FINAL EXAMINATION (2022)

Exam Date: 6 May 2022 (Friday)




Style: Closed Book Exam, online via Zoom




General Guideline




1. Time: 9:30 am – 11:30 am (2 hours), 6 May 2022 (Friday).




2. Exam paper: The Exam paper will be uploaded onto the course webpage http://www.phy.cuhk.edu.hk/course/2021-2022/2/phys4420/index.html



for download at around 9:25am on the above Exam date.




3. Type: This is a closed Book/Notes Exam. No book or notes in whatever format (hardcopy or electronic copy) shall be allowed in the Exam. You may, however, prepare an electronic calculator for doing simple algorithmic calculations.




4. Format: On-line via Zoom at the following link. Please join at 9:15 am for checking your student ID. The Zoom session will be recorded for future investigation if necessary. The recorded video will be deleted a month after the Final Exam.

5. Answer Book: All students must prepare A4 size white papers for writing answers.




6. Name: Write down your student ID and Name on the top of the 1st page of the answer book.




7. Attendance requirement: All students are required to turn on their own Zoom camera for invigilation purpose throughout the whole Exam period. Use your FULL NAME followed by last 5 digits of your ID as appear in CUSIS when you log in Zoom. Your screen name should be in the format: either CHAN Tai man 12345 (computer) or CHAN Tai Man 12345 (phone) that “12345” is the last 5 digits of your ID in CUSIS.




8. You will be required to show your student ID card before the Exam start. The camera or the phone should be angled so that the invigilators online can see you (at least the face and preferably the desk with the answer book you will be writing on). He/she should inform the Zoom host/co-host when leaving the Exam temporarily, e.g. for going to the washroom.




9. Exam ending: 2 hours from the Exam start time. Students must stop writing and start preparing submission (Note 10 below).




10. Submission (within 30mins): All students are required to scan the answer book into a pdf file with good quality (using, e.g. CamScanner, Microsoft Lens or equivalent app) before submitting to Blackboard under the “Final Exam Submission Folder”. In case of difficulties using the Blackboard, you may upload the pdf to the “host’s chatroom” on the Zoom page. DO NOT upload your pdf to “everyone’s chatroom”. File submission should be complete before 12:00 noon on the same day. Late submission without reasonable explanation will be considered as failing the Final Exam.




11. Quality of the answer book pdf: It’s the student’s responsibility to make the pdf of the answer book legible. File with poor legibility may affect your grading result.




12. Take note of the official rules to be observed in taking online course examinations issued by Registration and Examination Section (RES). Violation of these rules may lead to disciplinary action.





Make-up Exam




1. In case any student is absent in the Exam due to any of the reasons below, he/she may request a Make-up Exam on another day to be determined by the Instructor:




(i) health reason;




(ii) Compulsory Testing for COVID-19; and




(iii) unsuitable environment for taking online exam.




2. The absent student will be responsible to notify the Instructor and provide proofs within 24hours from the beginning of the Exam his/her for requesting an Make-up Exam. The instructor will have the ultimate authority to determine if the evidence provided is reasonable and acceptable to provide a Make-up Exam.




3. For the reason (iii) above, the student should indicate his limitations to the instructor well before the EXAM. If considered acceptable, the Instructor will coordinate with RES or Graduate School to arrange a classroom for him/her to take the Exam. Please inform the Instructor as early as possible so as to avoid taking an Make-up Exam.




4. Subject to the nature of the absence, the full mark of the Make-up Exam may not carry the full percentage towards the final grading of the whole course as compared with the regular Exam’s. Student should endeavour to attend the regular Exam as far as possible.
