Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS)

Learning Outcomes

  • Understanding of some aspects of Christianity in their historical and contemporary contexts
  • Competence to undertake critical analysis of and informed reflection on issues related to Christianity in contemporary society and culture
  • Acquaintance with the modes of enquiry of various disciplines of Christian studies
  • Appreciation of the rich diversity of Christian traditions
  • Development of interest in the critical and constructive study of Christianity

The degree should be completed within the normal period of study: normally one year for full-time students and normally two years for part-time students. Students must take at least one course per term throughout the normative study period. Part-time students should not take more than 3 courses in each term and not more than 5 courses in each academic year.

Students admitted in 2015-16 or before may choose to study in the General Stream or the Stream in one Area of Study, while students admitted in 2014-15 or before may also choose to study in the Stream in Workplace Theology.

Applications will be processed on a rolling basis until all places have been filled. Therefore, early applications are strongly encouraged. If places are no longer available after the earlier rounds, subsequent applications received may not be considered.

Admission Requirement

In addition to the general qualifications required for admission to the Graduate School, applicants should have a recognized Bachelor’s degree; degree holders in subjects other than Theology and Religious Studies are welcomed. Applicants should present letters of recommendation from a church-related person and from an undergraduate/postgraduate teacher or the university department concerned. Coursework Requirement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units (a minimum of 8 courses) for graduation.

Should a student be interested to take courses offered by other Graduate Divisions or undergraduate courses, approval from our School and the offering department must be obtained and the student should pay extra tuition fee for the course. The tuition fee is set by the offering department.

Graduation Requirements

  1. Students must fulfil the Term Assessment Requirement of the Graduate School. For details, please refer to Clause 13.0 "Unsatisfactory Performance and Discontinuation of Studies" of the General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies which can be accessed from the Graduate School Homepage.
  2. Students must take at least one course per term throughout the normative study period (stipulated in the ‘General Regulations Governing Postgraduate Studies’).
  3. IT Proficiency Test (Applicable to students admitted in 2011-12 and before. Please refer to “Student IT Competence”).
  4. Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
