The second fieldtrip to the Hong Kong Comix Home Base aims to provide the students with a real-life case study of cultural management, in a local context. This trip will facilitate a better understanding of the cultural management field. The Hong Kong Comix Home Base accommodates design and media companies in the context of historical buildings that were converted into cultural quarters, as a component of Hong Kong’s urban development, using governmental initiatives. Our students will have the opportunity to talk with managers in media and design companies, as well as the manager of a cultural quarter. This fieldtrip will assist with data collection for an active case study, to further the progress of the students’ term project.

Arranged in the opening day of the special exhibition, “Glistening Treasures in the Dust – Ancient Artefacts of Afghanistan,” this fieldwork to the Hong Kong Museum of History aimed to bring worldwide visions and comparative perspectives to students. Through reading rare goldware, bronze sculptures, and other artefacts from the National Museum of Afghanistan, students could have a deep appreciation of cultural diversity, transregional exchange, and integration of global civilisations. From these cherished relics that have escaped the clutches of the Taliban terrorists, students were able to appreciate the significance of heritage conservation, management, as well as transnational cultural collaboration. Another purpose of this trip was to visit the permanent gallery (Hong Kong Story), for students to gain a more comprehensive and heartfelt understanding of the “Pearl of the Orient,” especially the ups and downs of this beautiful and strong city.

Guided by Prof. Peng Peng, students had a selective examination of representative ancient Chinese ritual bronzes in the warehouse of CUHK Art Museum. Via this systematic and multi-pronged training, they learnt how to conduct visual observation, analytic analysis, label writing, comprehensive object study, as well as various curatorial tasks. Based on two or multiple chosen artworks, students passionately discussed the significances and implications of what they had discovered. All students have finally finished a critical analysis of their target bronzes in comparative perspectives. Some of these academic works, honestly speaking, are potentially publishable.
