The National Humanities Center (NHC) Residential Fellowships provide opportunities for scholars to engage in advanced humanities. Participants may undertake the programme in North Carolina for either one term or one year. In addition to traditional fields in the humanities, the NHC Residential Fellowships welcome proposals from scholars working on projects that present interdisciplinary connections like bioethics, environmental humanities, history of science and technology, and film and media studies. Proposals fostering cutting edge research and advancing scholarship in the broader humanities may receive priority consideration.

Established in 1978 and located in the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina, NHC is the world’s only independent institution exclusively dedicated to fostering advanced research in the Humanities. Over 1,500 scholars from nearly 40 nations have been in residence since its inception and they have produced over 1,700 books, many of which have won top awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Bancroft Prize. Between 35 and 40 Fellows are chosen from some 600 applicants each year. Fellowships at NHC are considered among the most prestigious in the world.

Eligibility
The programme invites nominations from the Faculties of Arts and Social Science annually and applications should be made to the two Faculties. Applicants should be full-time teaching appointees of Assistant Professor rank or above. Please check with your Faculty for the specific eligibility requirements.

Leave
Selected fellows are expected to spend either one term or one year at NHC. They should apply for their own accumulated leave and academic leave (or sabbatical leave if applicable), and/or no-pay study leave to pursue the fellowship programme. Applicants must indicate a feasible leave plan together with their applications.

Terms of Award
CUHK shall be responsible for the awarded fellow’s salary (provided on the basis of leave entitlement and on leave granted) and international travel expenses to/from the Center (which is supported by the Faculty/department); while NHC will provide the awarded fellow with financial support for housing, local transportation, health insurance, and the visa application fee.
