Professor Ling Minhua from the Centre for China Studies has been selected as a Member of the School of Social Science, Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), for 2022-23. Among the 24 selected members from a wide range of fields around the world, Professor Ling is the only scholar from Hong Kong.
As an anthropologist, Professor Ling specializes in ethnographic study particularly on the ramifications of migration and urbanization. During her year-long membership, she will examine through the lens of food the lived experiences of socioecological transformation in rural China and address health and environmental inequalities facing village children amid massive migration and state-led urbanization. With IAS’s provision of a space for intellectual debate and mutual enrichment, Professor Ling will be able to analyse ethnographic findings to prepare her publications that will open up critical dialogues between scholarships of migration, health, agriculture, food justice, environmental sustainability, and development studies.
The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) is one of the world’s leading centers for curiosity-driven basic research. Since 1930, it has served as a model for protecting and promoting independent inquiry, prompting the establishment of similar institutes around the world, and underscoring the importance of academic freedom worldwide. Each year, the IAS selects approximately 200 scholars from an average of more than 1,500 applicants from around the world in order to go to one of the Schools at IAS to pursue their research. For 2022-23, the theme for the School of Social Science will be "Climate Crisis Politics."
