In collaboration with the Department of Architecture at Tunghai University (THU), this joint studio investigated contextual place-making in Taichung, a culturally vibrant city in central Taiwan, using architectural design to develop alternative urban strategies. Led by our professors Patrick Hwang, Sebastian Law, Jin-Yeu Tsou, Casey Wang and TC Yuet, 60 BSSc Year 4 students went on a five-day research trip to Taichung in October 2017, during which they attended lectures and presented their first design exercises at THU. They also visited urban regeneration practices and architectural landmarks, including the Luce Chapel designed by I.M. Pei, as well as Maple Garden, a recreational green area that also serves as a retention pond for flood control.
The students further developed their projects in Hong Kong, focusing on the design of a Place of Collective Living in dialogue with the existing urban fabric in Taichung as a potential strategy to transform the city on a larger scale. The collaborative studio concluded in December 2017 at CUHK, where students from both universities presented their final designs to an audience of instructors and guest reviewers from the architectural profession.
