Introduction
Kelly Chow has been critically engaged in the design, development and application of integrated building strategies for over 20 years. He completed his studies in Canada – University of British Columbia (BASc); Technical University of Nova Scotia (BEDS); and Dalhousie University (MArch); and has worked in Canada, the UK, and Asia.
Kelly’s research interest, as both a practitioner and academic, lies largely within the crafted object and its adjacencies: crafting, making, designing, detailing and material culture. His background in mechanical engineering and experience in architectural practice have provided an extensive testing ground for such investigations and works. Crafting spaces for human occupation, where the needs for enclosure, performance and purpose come together as a holistic whole, has driven much of his body of work. Architecture must accommodate for these systems. By acknowledging this, and not seeing it as an afterthought in design, it can be made an integral part of the design process, with a clear strategy that operates at multiple scales.
