Alumnus Liu Sheng wins CUHK Postgraduate Research Output Award 2021

Date & Time

29.08.2022

CUHK architecture alumnus Liu Sheng (PhD 2021) has received CUHK Postgraduate Research Output Award 2021.

Supervised by Prof. Edward Ng, Liu Sheng explores the impacts of climate change on residential building performance in subtropical climates. He proposes a set of viable passive adaptation strategies for architects to mitigate the effects of climate change in his thesis “Building Performance and Passive Adaptation Strategies in Changing Climatic Conditions: A Case Study of Residential Buildings in Subtropical Hong Kong”. In the first stage, a set of future and extreme weather data was constructed for building performance simulation in Hong Kong. Employing those newly developed weather data, the study evaluated the impacts of climate change on indoor thermal comfort and cooling demands of several typical residential building types and the city scale’s electricity demands. To mitigate the effects of future climate change, the study assessed the effectiveness of different passive measures for retrofitting residential buildings, finding optimal solutions considering the trade-off among various stakeholders.

The Postgraduate Research Output Award is nominated annually by each Faculty of CUHK to recognise research postgraduate students with commendable research achievements during their studies.
