24.05.2022

Terra Centre, a rammed-earth multi-purpose building located on the Kunming University of Science and Technology campus, has been awarded the “HKIA Merit Award outside Hong Kong – Institutional Building & Special Architectural Award – Humanity & Social Inclusion”.

The project, designed by the One University One Village (1U1V) team led by Prof. Edward Ng, is more than a building site but a platform for educating the local community, demonstrating the seismic earth construction techniques, and research. Considering the subtropical climate of Kunming, the building adopts designs that ensure indoor environmental quality and low energy consumption. The team has utilised local materials, local techniques, and local labour to build the Centre, in the hope of addressing the country’s poverty and environmental sustainability issues.

Since 1965, the HKIA Annual Awards has been one of the most important architectural awards in Hong Kong for recognising outstanding achievements in architecture. This year’s awarded projects include not only landmark buildings but also social projects that illustrate the diversity and international recognition of the local architecture field.
