Leading Healthy and Thriving Schools in Hong Kong: Theory and Practice is the first book in the Healthy Settings Series, which focuses on the upstream, midstream, and downstream approaches for improving population health and reducing health inequity in various settings and contexts. This book, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, establishes the kind of leadership a health-promoting school needs to be successful. It explains the steps school leaders should take to promote health, beginning with an explanation of the link between health and education and then moving into a discussion of how schools can be transformed and what sort of leaders are required for such a transformation. These changes can be applied in individual classrooms and schools as well as more broadly across whole education systems. “Book of Health (Series 1): Hygiene
& You”
This first series “Book of Health – Hygiene
& You” consists of five storybooks, which describe how children
may be threatened by infectious diseases in daily life. The books also
demonstrate the correct hygiene practices and teach children their
responsibilities in maintaining health. Young readers are able to gain
these knowledge and skills through reading these interesting stories
with their parents. In addition, teachers or parents can also guide
their students through the reading, and use the questions on the last
page of each storybook to help children reflecting their health
practice and attitude, and to provide them with plenty of chances to
put health behaviours into practice. This will certainly help the
children becoming responsible, independent and healthy persons, who are
capable to face the threat of health risks. |

This
series of stories in the Book of Health describe the peer and family pressures or challenges faced by kids today. It will surely become one
of the healthy supplementary reading materials for kids, in which

teachers, kids will become healthy, enthusiastic, kind and confident

“Book of Health (Series 3): You Are What You
Eat”
“You Are What You Eat” is one of the elaborate series of “Book of Health”, which provides the parent sand teachers with a friendly tool to equip children with the knowledge and skills on healthy eating. Linking up nutrition education with planting becomes one of the key features of the series. Five stories happened in schools deliver five core messages about healthy eating: (1) no picky eating; (2) healthy snacking; (3) benefits of eating fruits and vegetables; (4) proper weight control; and (5) food safety and making wise choices. Through reading, children will not only acquire knowledge of healthy eating, but will also foster the attitudes of treasuring food and maintaining a balanced diet, as well as the motivation of applying the knowledge and attitudes into practice. |
