Year 1 student (2018-19)

I have always paid high attention to public health and hope to contribute to it. The BSc in Community Health Practice program equips students with knowledge of disease prevention and skills of advocating health protection to the community to achieve the concept that prevention is better than cure. In the future, I hope I can help establish a healthy and safe community from strengthening the local community network and inter-sectoral collaboration.

The programme enables students to gain preliminary experience of applying theories in real-life scenarios through 250 hours of supervised fieldwork in a community setting. It is a valuable opportunity for students to stay away from their comfort zone so as to broaden the horizon and equip for their future career.

Besides, the school will assign an academic advisor for each student to support them and provide precious advice throughout their studies in CUHK. Under the guidance of Professor Mo, I found my passion and made up my mind to be a part of the Health Education sector.

HUI Cheuk Lam

Year 1 student (2018-19)

The BSc in Community Heath Practice program provides practicum opportunities in some health-related research aspects, which allow us to apply the knowledge we have learnt during lessons and prepare us for our future career.

During my study, I participated in a research on bacterial resistance as a student helper. By contacting the participants to join the study, it is a great chance for me to apply the knowledge in epidemiology to explain the purpose of this study, so as to enhance the cognition for the public that how important public health is.

Meanwhile, I learnt a lot about chronic diseases when I took medicine records for my patients. These cases always reinforce my belief that the burden of the healthcare system can be substantially alleviated if disease prevention measures are enhanced.

It also inspires me to learn more in health promotion aspect to give a hand in our community and have contribution with what I have learnt.

CHIU Kar Man

Year 2 student (2018-19)

Motivated by the famous saying “Prevention is better than cure”, I applied for the BSc in Community Health Practice programme to acquire techniques in health-related researches and knowledge in health promotion. I find the professors very approachable. In addition, the peer support that I gained from “PASS” sessions offered by the programme after class helped me learn better and made studying less stressful.

The most valuable part of the programme was the practicum experience in HK Breast Cancer Foundation which allowed me to broaden my horizon, consolidate my knowledge and put what I have learned into practice.

Lastly, the school offers students lots of opportunities to participate in different research projects. This experience allow me to reflect on my future career paths from wider perspectives. They also promote my confidence in health-related research work.

SIU Wai Yu

As university students, we all have a unique school life. But can you still recall your goal of joining the family of Community Health Practice?

I joined this family two years ago and targeted to be an expert in preventing diseases while mastering skills in improving health status of the community. Through study, I became more knowledgeable and confident in organizing primary health care events. Practicum in a NGO is one of the most memorable time of mine in preparing me for joining the sector of disease prevention. Through the practicum, I learnt the most important element in being a health promoter which is care the community.  

I become a civil servant after my graduation with my memorable two years in Community Health Practice. I believe all communication skills and skills in enhancing community health I learnt will always be my guide in the future.

The most unbearable things of leaving school are being away from all well-trained professors in school and my very fulfilling university life such as being a society member, living in a hostel, participating in study tours…… With all the support of our school, please believe that success will eventually come when your heart stays true and unchanged!
