EASC 5101 Advanced Topics in Geophysics
Syllabus
The course EASC 5101 Advanced Topics in Geophysics contains half-half of lectures and discussions.
Text book
- Aki and Richards (2002), Quantitative Seismology
- Scholz, C. H. (2002), The Mechanics of Earthquakes and Faulting
Course content
- Understanding seismic waveforms (data processing) and instruments (field experiments)
- Kinematic source presentation
- Dynamic source process
- Multiple types of data (e.g. geodetic) applied in understanding earthquake source process

Field experiments of seismometers
In order to understand the seismic waveforms and the seismic instruments, on 22 Jan 2021, we conducted our seismometer experiments near the PG Hall 2 (next to CWChu Colleage) in CUHK campus, close to the MTR railway.

Field experiments near the MTR railway
Before conducting the experiments, Prof. Yang introduced the two types of instruments, the strong motion accelerometer and the broad-band velocity seismometer. The we set the instruments on the ground surface and monitored the waveforms when the rail trains passing by.
