Research on China has been an integral part of CUHK's academic tradition since the University's first days. This zone introduces our distinguished scholars and institutes of Chinese Studies:
The Masters
The founding fathers of the Chinese University boasted many visionary scholars of Chinese studies. While bearing the torch for the Chinese scholastic tradition, they also interpreted a new Chinese studies from modern perspectives. They advocated re-visiting the value of Chinese history and culture, and re-establishing the Chinese humanistic spirit and the traditional moral social order. They have nurtured many talent in Chinese studies, wielded great influence in the Chinese academic circle and, not least, laid a solid foundation for the work of promoting Chinese culture at the University.
International Hub of Chinese Studies
Research on Chinese studies has been an integral part of CUHK’s academic tradition since the University’s first days. Currently, CUHK undertakes a wide scope of research in this discipline, covering languages, literature and the performing arts, as well as fields such as cultural heritage and history, social and regional development, political and legal development, public health and environment, and commerce and law. The purpose is to ensure the continuance of Chinese culture and its humanistic spirit, and its transmission from generation to generation.
The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) was reorganized with the goal of broadening the remit of ICS to include Chinese studies broadly defined, in order to strengthen inter-disciplinary cooperation in Chinese studies, facilitating the efforts to make CUHK a premier international hub of Chinese studies.
The Art Museum serves the university community and the Hong Kong SAR by collecting, preserving, researching and exhibiting a wide range of artefacts illuminating the rich arts, humanities, and cultural heritage of ancient and pre-modern China.
The Universities Service Centre for China Studies (USC) serves academics and budding scholars engaged in the study of contemporary China with its most extensive and accessible collection of a great variety of materials.
D.C. Lau Research Centre for Chinese Ancient Texts aims to build up an electronic database of the entire corpus of traditional and excavated ancient Chinese texts, to conduct relevant researches, and to publish the findings via different media.
The Chinese University Press is a non-profit organization devoted to the advancement, preservation and dissemination of knowledge, as well as the promotion of multi-cultural academic exchanges. The Press publishes more than fifty titles per year and carries well over 1,300 titles on its backlist. It is an established publisher of many scholarly works on China and Hong Kong studies and on Chinese culture.
