This course is designed to help Chinese studies majors in their junior and senior years fulfill their immersion studies requirement. The selected texts for this course vary according to the instructor’s research expertise and students’ research interests. There will be workshops helping students identify major journals and archives in Chinese language, pick relevant research texts for close reading, write a bibliographical essay, and present on the topic based on the selected reading. The class will be conducted in both Chinese and English to accommodate students’ language proficiency.

Week 6           Feng Zikai & Zhu Guangqian: artist vs scholar

Week 7           Academic Writing workshop

Part Two. Post May Fourth Literature & Culture

Week 8           Self-awakening or Self-deception since the 60s

Week 9           the Rise of Anti-enlightenment in the 90s

Week 10         the Alienation in the new century 2000s~

Week 11         Taiwan Literature: Bai Xianyong & Zhu Xining

Week 12         Hong Kong Literature: Xi Xi & Liu Yichang

Week 13                     Research Week, No Class

Week 14 & 15            Final Project Presentation

1) Attendance and Participation (15%)
