GBS Alumna Wins Asian Women of Achievement Award for Empowering Women from Developing Countries through Photography

12 August 2016

Bonnie Chiu, a Global Business Studies (GBS) alumna and co-founder and CEO of Lensational, won this year's Asian Women of Achievement (AWA) Young Achiever Award in London.

The AWA Awards, now in their 17th year, celebrate the contributions made by Asian women both professionally and in their communities, cutting across a broad range of sectors in British life from business and media to sport, culture and public service.

At just 23 years old, Chiu is the founder of the non-profit social enterprise Lensational, which aims to empower marginalized women by offering them training in photography. Since launching in 2013, the organization has expanded to a team of 50 volunteers who have trained 300 women across nine developing countries. Outside of Lensational, Chiu is the Managing Director at The Social Investment Consultancy. Chiu is now pursuing a master’s degree at the London School of Economics.

Pinky Lilani CBE DL, Founder, Asian Women of Achievement Awards said, "We are thrilled for all the winners, who are united by their passions and inspirational achievements. The diversity of this year’s winners highlights that Asian women in Britain are bucking stereotypes while making an enormous contribution to British life. I am immensely proud to stand alongside this inspiring group of women."

Co-founded by Pinky Lilani CBE DL in 1999, the AWA Awards were conceived to celebrate the often unsung Asian heroines of British life. Such women make a huge contribution in fields as diverse as business, entrepreneurship and social and humanitarian work. These awards are their well-deserved moments in the spotlight.
