Biographical / Historical

胡菊人 (1933-　)，原名胡秉文，另有筆名華谷月。祖籍廣東順德。五十年代初，初中三未畢業便隨親戚到香港謀生，曾在聖類斯中學當校役和教堂雜役。

1955 年獲潘誠及黃清泉介紹加入友聯出版社資料部工作，同時半工讀於珠海書院英語系進修。1961 年畢業後，先後擔任《大學生活》社長兼總編輯、《中國學生周報》社長等職。1962 年應美國國務院邀請到當地考察半年。回港後離開友聯出版社，曾在 University Center（大學中心）短暫工作，後來加入美國新聞處《今日世界》叢書部當編輯。

應查良鏞邀請，於1967 年加入《明報月刊》出任總編輯至1979年。1980 年轉任《中報》及《中報月刊》總編輯。1981 年與陸鏗創辦《百姓》半月刊，兼任總編輯，直至 1994 年《百姓》停刊。隨後移居加拿大溫哥華。

大專時期開始從事寫作，文章見於《明報》、《東方日報》、《良友》等報刊專欄。曾任香港青年文學獎評判、市政局中文文學創作獎評判。曾任香港作家協會主席、香港文化藝術工作者聯合會監事會主席、香港作家聯會理事等職。

著作有《坐井集》、《旅遊閑筆》、《紅樓、水滸與小說藝術》、《文學的視野》、《小說技巧》等。亦有編輯《中國當代散文選》、《1997・香港 : 香港地位問題資料匯編》等書籍。
