Message from the Head of Graduate Divison

Dr CHEN Li Jia Guy

Our Department provides integrated, international standard, training in both laboratory and clinical sciences in ophthalmology. Researches in our Department mainly include randomized controlled trials, epidemiology, disease risk factor identification, ocular imaging, animal models, ocular stem cell, cellular biology, gene function, and molecular and clinical genetics of major eye diseases, including glaucoma, myopia, age-related macular degeneration, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, diabetic retinopathy, corneal dystrophy, and retinoblastoma.

Whilst postgraduate students in our Department will receive both in-depth and multidisciplinary training based on research projects, they should also fulfill basic requirements on course planning from the University. Moreover, we request each student to be hardworking, honest, and helpful, so that he/she can form good team spirit, and become an honorable researcher / doctor.

Our Department conducts full-time and part-time Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) research programmes. We have established an MPhil and PhD education platform, pertaining to personal education and aiming for academic excellence.

We provide an environment for medical degree graduates to advance basic science knowledge and to conduct both clinical and laboratory based research. We also accept graduates of life science disciplines to undertake research related to eye diseases and develop a career in medical sciences.

Students can select research programmes from a wide spectrum of eye diseases in Corneal and External Eye Diseases, Cataracts and Refractive Errors, Glaucoma, Vitreoretinal Diseases, as well as Orbital, Thyroid, Neurologic, Genetic and Children Eye Diseases. Students are accessible to all equipment and facilities in our research clinic and laboratories in ophthalmic imaging, microscopy, electrophysiology, molecular genomics, gene functions, cell and tissue culture, stem cells, experimental animals, and analytical biochemistry.

Currently, we have 16 MPhil and PhD students in our department. Most of them are recipients of post-graduate studentships from CUHK.

Please refer to CUHK Graduate School website for the general entry requirement.

  • PhD : Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a field related to life sciences or the degree of MBChB or equivalent.
  • MPhil : Applicants should have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a field related to life sciences or the degree of MBChB or equivalent.
  • Tuition Fee for UGC-funded RPg Programmes : HK$ 42100 (per annum)
  • Application Fee : HK$ 300
  • Caution Money : HK$ 450
  • Hostel Fee : Please refer to the information provided by the Postgraduate Halls

Postgraduate studentship (PGS) is available to full-time RPg students and is awarded to them at the time of admission. Students awarded PGS will receive stipends in return for assisting in the teaching and research work of the Graduate Division. The current monthly stipend is HK$16,690 for MPhil and PhD (pre-candidacy), or HK$17,125 for PhD (post-candidacy). This monthly stipend is payable only within the normative study period and is subject to revision by the University from time to time as it considers fit.

Our Department is committed to research of eye diseases at the highest standard and offers unique opportunities in the study of eye diseases using state-of-the-art technologies.

Our basic research involved studies on the etiology, molecular genetics, histopathology, biochemistry, and therapeutic responses of various eye diseases. In 1999 we established a comprehensive research laboratory system with modern facilities.

Please apply our MPhil and PhD Programmes via the CUHK Graduate School website.
