David Sung Memorial Scholarship in Ophthalmology (Scientific Scholarship) has been established in the academic year 2020/21. It was set up by Professor Joseph JY SUNG and family in memory of Prof SUNG’s beloved father, Mr. David SUNG to recognize excellent research achievement for PhD students of DOVS.
Eligibility: The candidate must
- Be a Full-time PhD student at the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the Faculty of Medicine, CUHK and
- Be selected by a Selection Committee chaired by the Chairman of Department. Other membership of Selection Committee includes a representative from the SUNG Family as nominated by Professor Joseph SUNG, and Head of the DOVS Graduate Division;
- Demonstrate research excellence in science (i.e. both clinical and basic) and the potential to become a great scientist.
- For continuation of support in subsequent years, the candidate must be achieving good progress in research to obtain a second and third year funding.
Full assessment of the track records and oral presentation from the applicants will be conducted by the Selection Committee.
Number and Amount of the award:
There will be ONE award of “Scientific Scholar” and TWO awards of “Certificate of Merit” each year.
The awardee of “Scientific Scholar” will receive HK$60,000 per annum and the award shall be tenable for three years at maximum subject to satisfactory progress in academic and research performance of the student.
The awardee of “Certificate of Merit” will be eligible to apply for the award in the following year. To recognize continuous efforts, 3 points will be added to his/her overall score in the next year’s application.
