The Foundation Laying Ceremony of the New Hospital Complex of JSIEC was held on 29th December 2016 at 11:30am, started with a welcome address by Prof Zhang Mingzhi, Vice Director (executive) of JSIEC, followed by speeches from Prof Calvin C. P. Pang, Director of JSIEC, Prof Yao Ke, President of Chinese Ophthalmological Society, and Ms Solina Chau, Director of Li Ka Shing Foundation. Since its inauguration in June 2002, the JSIEC, at its present premises with a floor area of about 10,000 square meters, has developed into a major eye center in southern China, providing ophthalmic service to over 20 million people in Shantou and the surrounding regions. With the current work load of about 250,000 outpatients and 20,000 surgeries a year and still rising, plus active research work and community services, we are in great need of further expansion.

On a 20-acre piece of land at the new development area along the eastern coast of the municipality of Shantou, we plan to build a new hospital complex with total floor area of about 40,000 square meters, to provide enhanced clinical ophthalmic services, research, and community work. We are glad to have good progress in the building and construction preparation, with the full support by the Shantou municipal government and Shantou University Medical College.

After the Ceremony, the JSIEC Ophthalmology Symposium and the Li Ka Shing Foundation Research Student Forum were conducted 29th-30th December 2016. More than 300 ophthalmologists, visual scientists and research students participated in these events. We are particularly grateful to the presence and contributions from more than 50 speakers.
