Our postdoctoral fellow received the “Travel Grant” from “the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Virtual Annual Meeting 2021”

Dr. Anran Ran, our postdoctoral fellow, received the “Travel Grant” from “the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) Virtual Annual Meeting 2021″ for her paper titled “Association between Alzheimer’s Disease and Artificial Intelligence-based Glaucomatous Optic Neuropathy Score”. Supervised by our faculty A/Prof. Carol Y. Cheung, Dr. Ran is currently a key research staff involving in several important projects for AI-based early detection of diseases from ocular images, such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

In the conference, Dr. Ran presented a poster on the findings of her awarded paper, which showed that Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) was not strongly associated with AI-based GON scores. Glaucomatous optic neuropathy (GON) continuous scores were generated from optical coherence tomography (OCT) optic disc images by an artificial intelligence (AI) model. The AI model was previously developed and validated with 6,921 OCT volumetric scans collected in Hong Kong and America, which achieved comparable performance to experienced glaucoma specialists for GON identification. Further research is still warranted to investigate the association between AD and GON.

This award is a great encouragement and recognition of our research. Congratulations to Dr. Ran!
