Our Associate Professor Dr. Jason Yam has been awarded the Gold Medal for Best Original Research by Young Fellows from Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) on the 6th of December 2019. The Prize for Best Original Research by Young Fellows was established at 2019 by HKAM to recognize excellence in outstanding research conducted and led by young Fellows. The Gold Medal Award is an extremely prestigious prize as the winning paper were selected from 30 exceedingly high-quality eligible submissions of papers across all specialties of HKAM, published no earlier than 1 January 2018.
Dr. Yam’s research “Low-Concentration Atropine for Myopia Progression (LAMP) Study” (Ophthalmology 2019(1):113-124) is the world’s first double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled trial to establish the efficacy of low-concentration atropine eye drops for myopia (short-sightedness) control. Of note, 0.05% atropine can reduce yearly myopia progression up to 67%. The study has brought paradigm shift in management of childhood myopia worldwide, and conferred clinical relevance to millions of children suffering from fast progressing myopia.
