KEEP eLearning Community of Practice 2021

You are cordially invited to the upcoming KEEP eLearning Community of Practice 2021 to be held over Zoom on Friday, 5 February 2021. This half-day event aims to bring academics and industry professionals together to discuss recent progress in the development of KEEP as well as in overall teaching and learning.

This year’s theme is “KEEP Learning for Life: Technology for Lifelong Learning!”. The emphasis will be on how to educate through the use of technology with KEEP. The event will consist of a keynote presentation on the topic of “Gamification in Education: the Future of Learning” by Prof. Benson Yeh from PaGamO/Bonio Inc. and the National Taiwan University, followed by a teacher sharing session where teachers from different institutions come together to share their experience with KEEP and other educational technologies. We are expecting a packed room, containing collaborators of KEEP and veterans who are in the eLearning field among 8 UGC-funded institutions and beyond.

Keynote Presentation: Gamification in Education: the Future of Learning

Prof. Yeh, Ping-Cheng (Benson), CEO & Co-Founder of PaGamO/Bonio Inc. and Professor of EE Dept., National Taiwan University

Abstract:
How can we keep students engaged to the class? How can we make our students motivated to learn? These have been the most challenging questions for teachers nowadays. Prof. Yeh developed a series of Peer-to-Peer Gamification schemes following his unique teaching teaching philosophy: "For the student! By the student! Of the student!”. In this talk, Prof. Yeh will explain how his award winning gamification scheme and other P2P schemes works for different courses. He will show the amazing results from his students’ course work. It is the new paradigm shift for the education of future.

Bio:
Prof. Yeh has pioneered many educational experiments and designs. In 2016, he received the highest award for innovators in Taiwan, the Presidential Innovation Award. He also developed PaGamO, the first-ever multi-student game for any general courses in 2013. It received the Overall Award and E-Learning Award in Wharton-QS 2014 Stars Awards: Reimagine Education, the "Oscars" of innovations in higher education. Since 2010, Prof. Yeh has been the strong advocator of his teaching philosophy: “For the students, By the students, Of the students". It states that students can be motivated to learn if the teachers can share more responsibility with the students, for instance, let students design their own homework problems. Prof. Yeh’s speeches have motivated tens of thousands of teachers in Asia to start thinking differently in teaching.

Teacher Sharing: How to Teach Your Students Successfully through KEEP Technologies?

Ms. Joan Atienza, Senior Associate, Instructional Design and Development Unit, SEAMEO INNOTECH

Abstract:
SEAMEO is an intergovernmental organization of Southeast Asian countries aimed at cooperation in the areas of science, culture and education. There are in total 26 SEAMEO Center located in the different Southeast Asian countries. INNOTECH, located in the Philippines, is focused on research and capacity building programs in the area of educational innovation and technologies. INNOTECH has been developing online courses for educators since 2006. The partnership with KEEP facilitated its implementation of MOOCs beginning 2017.

Abstract:
The English Language Centre (ELC) at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University has created 10 open online courses on KEEP, ranging from job application skills to developing language and reading skills. We have designed our courses to minimise the number of clicks for learners. This makes them easier for students to navigate and complete, and easier for instructors to integrate into their campus-based subjects. The ELC has found the online courses on KEEP invaluable in helping us make the transition to online learning and teaching. The ready-made content frees up teacher time to focus on more important communicative activities with their students.

Abstract:
Due to the recent changes of the educational landscape brought by unprecedented challenges, online/mixed-mode learning and teaching has gained more popularity than ever before. Apart from the adoption of a Small Private Online Course, it was deemed necessary to incorporate more eLearning elements into the course “Teaching University Students”, so as to reach a wider community of research postgraduate students and teaching assistants from countries across the globe. Students benefited from the opportunities to interact with and learn from their local and overseas peers, while the instructors could bring in more internationalisation elements to the University.

Abstract:
The German programme at the Department of Linguistics & Modern Languages has been using KEEP Moodle as an integral part of its courses for several years in order to complement face-to-face classes by online activities. Therefore, the presenters would like to take the opportunity to a) give a general idea about the German Moodle courses structure, b) present a variety of Moodle activities, and c) give ideas of how to combine online/ face-to-face teaching with Moodle activities.
