Centre for eLearning Innovation and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Community of Practices Symposium of Education Innovation and Technology 2022
What if you could learn anything in the world without time and space constraints?

For the first time ever, we are entering the metaverse—an interconnected digital world that seamlessly integrates physical and virtual spaces. Education can now transcend classroom learning and become a completely immersive experience. So if you’re tired of flipping pages, why not dive into a world that brings the material to life and inspires new ways of thinking?

With just a computer or a mobile device, you can teleport yourself to any place or time. Let’s say you want to learn about marine biology. Then take a scuba-diving journey through the Great Barrier Reef, even if you can’t swim. What if you want to explore the solar system or trek across the desert to discover the pyramids of Ancient Egypt? Let the metaverse be your spaceship or caravan, allowing you to go wherever you please.

In the metaverse, you always have choices. Learning experiences are created to suit your aspirations, and you can even customize your avatar to express yourself and showcase your unique identity. The metaverse allows you to freely join social networks of any kind, expanding your community far beyond the boundaries of physical limitations.

We are still on the cusp of discovering all the different ways that the metaverse will revolutionize education. In order to take advantage of this unprecedented opportunity, we need a dedicated network of educators, developers, and community members to fully engage with this idea and examine its exciting potential.

So, join us to explore the metaverse for education!

Panel Discussion on “Exploring the Place for Micro-credentials in Hong Kong”
The idea of Micro-Credentialing relates to offering flexible and extended learning pathways for academic staff and students and creates an ongoing learning partnership with the institution both before and during UG study, as well as across PG study and beyond.

“In skills, education and training policy around the world, micro-credentials are increasingly being positioned as a solution to a wide range of economic, labour market, and social challenges. Broadly defined, they are stackable, industry-aligned short units of learning designed to help individuals form specific skills and signal those skills to employers”.
REFERENCE OCED - https://www.oecd-forum.org/posts/micro-credentials-the-new-frontier-of-adult-education-and-training

The growing use of micro-credentials is an outcome of the changing nature of the labour market and of growing uncertainty as to what work will look like in the future. Fewer ‘jobs for life’ now exist, and employers demand flexibility and quick reactions to changing circumstances. Micro-credentials are particularly useful as a response to the changing education and economic realities due to Covid-19. In this situation, as they allow for tailored, quick and accessible skills (re)development. This panel will explore the place for micro-credentialing in Hong Kong from various perspectives.

Panel members
(1) Prof. Michael Sankey, Director Learning Futures & Lead Education Architect, Charles Darwin University, Australia;
(2) Prof. Mark Brown, Director of the National Institute for Digital Learning, Dublin City University, Ireland;
(3) Mr Ivan Wong, Public Sector Head (HK & Macau), LinkedIn, Singapore; and

eteaching4u: Copyright, Creative Commons and Open Educational Resources in Virtual Instruction
Copyright is meant to encourage creativity by conferring exclusive rights on authors and enabling copyright owners to make profits by distributing or licensing copyright works. Nevertheless, in reality, the copyright regime is too complex and technical for a layman to comprehend. In virtual learning, teachers are creators as well as users of copyright materials.

There are burning questions regarding copyright issues in teaching and learning. For example, would it be copyright infringement when teachers and students include copyright works like images or music into their presentations, teaching/learning materials or social media? Who owns the copyright for contents created during learning activities? How can we creatively and ethically use copyright works?

We would like to discuss the potential and affordances of Creative Commons (CC), Open Educational Resources (OER) and CC/OER-enabled pedagogies with some examples in training.

  • Copyright, OER and CC in teaching and learning
  • OER/CC adoption (e.g. how to search and adopt CC-licensed works)
  • OER/CC creation (e.g. deciding which CC licenses should be adopted)
  • OER/CC in general education, introductory courses and other courses
Through the training, participants can reflect on better practices and design considerations in CC/OER-enabled pedagogies. Upon completion, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify copyright owners and avoid infringement;
  • Identify the opportunities and challenges of adopting CC and OER in the curriculum; and
  • Use CC and OER to facilitate classroom learning and assessment.

eteaching4u: Artificial Intelligence for Teaching, Learning and Assessment
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the fastest-growing technology in various fields. The adoption of AI spans the global learning landscape and has been used in experiential learning, tutoring, language learning, and knowledge testing. In higher education, some educators have identified the affordances of AI and utilized this technology in making teaching and learning more effective. In particular, there is a high demand for teachers to provide meaningful and prompt feedback to students within and beyond the classroom. However, designing such an experience can be challenging as this requires a lot of teachers’ time and attention to their students. Systems powered by AI can provide 24/7 support to teachers and multiple learners at the same time, with personalized support and guide them in an engaging way in the virtual environment. Some may worry that creating an AI tool from scratch requires complex computer programming skills but there are more and more AI-facilitated tools for teaching and learning.

In this webinar, we would like to discuss the potential and affordances of AI in education with some examples of AI tools for classroom engagement and assessment. Through the webinar, participants can reflect on better practices and design considerations in AI-facilitated teaching and learning.

Upon completion of this seminar, the participants will be able to:

  • Identify the opportunities and challenges of adopting AI tools in the classroom; and
  • Use the concept of AI learning technologies and learning analytics to facilitate classroom learning and assessment.
