Guided Study Plan

The Independent Learning Centre (ILC): Consultation Services

The ILC offers a Guided Study Plan (GSP) program which provides individual guidance for students who would like to further enhance their long term Independent Learning Skills¹. Unlike the consultation service, the GSP involves an ILC teacher working intensively with students to develop a study plan which focuses on a specific area¹ in which they encounter problems during their studies. While the ILC teacher would provide mentoring service and study advice, success in GSP mainly depends on the motivation and commitment of students (both in terms of time and effort) in improving their chosen area. Participation in GSP is by invitation from the ILC teachers’ assessment of students’ level of motivation and commitment. Students may then attend the GSP meetings individually or in small groups (usually no more than 3). GSP students are expected to complete at least 6 meetings with the ILC teacher.

Step 1: Receive invitation from an ILC teacher.
Step 2: Identify a specific area¹ that you would like to improve in and set realistic learning goals for yourself in GSP. Browse through ILC workshops and resources. Identify a few workshops and resources which you think can help you achieve your learning goals. Be ready to discuss your ideas with the ILC teacher in the first meeting.
Step 3: Download a copy of the Guided Study Plan Form and bring it with you to the first meeting.
Step 4: Attend all the meetings and complete tasks as suggested by the ILC teacher. Upon the successful completion of the GSP, you will receive an ILC Certificate of Achievement.

¹ Skill/study area includes: critical thinking/ problem solving/ goal setting/ listening/ reading/ writing/ speaking/ grammar/ vocabulary/ pronunciation.
