Acting Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the HKSAR Gives Talk on Diplomacy in CUHK
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) invited Mr. Yang Yirui, Acting Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The People’s Republic of China in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to host a talk on diplomacy on 19 March in CUHK. The talk was entitled Current International Situation and China’s Diplomacy. Prof. Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK, attended the talk and gave a welcome speech. Prof. Anthony Fung, Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of CUHK moderated the talk. The event received overwhelming responses with more than 400 participants registered for participation.
In the welcome speech, Prof. Tuan stated that the global spread of the epidemic clearly showed that the world must work together to enhance joint strengths in global economic and social recovery as well as harmonious development. Mr. Yang shared insights over the great changes in the world unseen in a century, together with the far-reaching impact of the epidemic on the international situation, along with the features and achievements of China’s diplomatic work in 2020. He explained the ideas and innovations relating to major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics in the new era. Professor Fung as a moderator chaired the Q and A session, discussing topics covering China’s diplomatic opportunities and challenges, including Sino-US trade disputes, and China’s relations with neighboring countries. Commissioner Mr. Yang stated that in the post-epidemic era, it is expected that China will have more active diplomacy to promote the development of multilateralism, turning crises into opportunities, and bolstering closer ties with countries around the world.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor Professor Rocky Tuan Speaks at the Global University Presidents’ Online Forum
Hosted by Zhejiang University (ZJU) with the theme of Role of Universities in the 2030 Agenda, the Global University Presidents’ Online Forum was held on 24 March. Focusing on the role of universities in the 2030 agenda in sustainable development, the virtual forum brought together a diverse group of speakers including UN high-ranking officials and presidents of 13 universities around the world. Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) attended the Forum and gave keynote speech.Prof. Tuan’s speech was titled “Scientific Collaboration for the Advancement of UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)”. He stated that research impact for sustainable development should be promoted through global partnerships. CUHK is committed to addressing society’s greatest challenges and fulfilling its social responsibility. A Social Responsibility & Sustainable Development Office was established in January 2021. CUHK and Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust also launched the The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Hong Kong programme in order to connect researchers with international experts of SDSN’s worldwide national/regional networks and thematic networks. The University will pursue university social responsibility goals that align with the SDGs to have greater impact.
Apart from the keynote speech, Prof. Tuan together with Presidents and Vice-Chancellors of other participating universities have released a joint statement. It is the first time that leading universities across six continents have jointly made a statement on SDGs, reaffirming collective commitment of the global higher education community to solidarity, resilience and prosperity in supporting relevant research work, fostering innovative solutions for sustainable development and leveraging technology to facilitate sustainable partnerships across borders.
Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Gives Thematic Talk Organized by CUHK-Tsinghua University MBA in Finance Programme
An online talk of the MBA in Finance Programme co-organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University (Tsinghua) was held on 30 March. Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of CUHK was invited as a guest speaker for the talk.Professor Tuan introduced the establishment, development and research achievements of CUHK to the students, which also covered the inseparable partnership with mainland China and CUHK;s strategic plan in the next 5 years. The talk not only provided participants with a better understanding of the history of the University, but also let them gain insight into the development opportunities. Considering that the students cannot come to CUHK campus during pandemic period, Professor Tuan especially presented a video in which he and the senior management group sang a song called “The CU Heart and CU Mind”. Interactive sessions were available to exchange views relating to operation of tertiary education, the difficulties faced in cultivating talents, and the ways to response and support. More than 150 people participated in the event, including current students of MBA in Finance Programme as well as the alumni.
CUHK-Tsinghua MBA in Finance Programme was launched by the two universities in 2000. It is China’s first MBA programme in Finance, bringing scholars from Tsinghua and CUHK together as well as many experts from academia and industry to nurture potential and qualified talents.
