CUHK Jointly Organizes Academic Symposium with NSFC
Co-organized by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre (BHKAEC), the Academic Symposium on Climate Change, Health and Sustainability was held in CUHK from 24 to 25 November 2021. Guests officiating at the opening ceremony included Professor Sham Mai-Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of CUHK; Mr. Liu Mao-Zhou, Level II Inspector of Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr. Hsu Hoi Shan, Director and President of Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. Two renowned keynote speakers joining the symposium were Dr. Tian-Jun Zhou, researcher of Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences; and Dr. Rebecca Lee Lok-Sze, Founder of Polar Museum Foundation.
Apart from the 2 keynote talks, a total of 26 academic presentations were delivered to enhance intellectual exchange in the field. Scholars and students from local universities including CUHK, The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University joined the symposium as well. Among CUHK speakers were academic members from Department of Geography and Resource Management, School of Public Health and Primary Care, and School of Life Sciences. The event successfully brought together experts and scholars to share ideas for future research and collaborations.
Since 2007, CUHK and NSFC have co-organized annual academic symposia with different themes, providing platforms for intellectual exchange between scientists and scholars in the China mainland and Hong Kong, while exploring collaboration opportunities. Previous topics included Quantum Information Science and Technology, Smart Cities, Bio-informatics and Its Applications, Chemical Biology, Condensed Matter and Optical Physics, Developmental Studies in Health and Diseases, Control and Automation, Climate Change, Digestive Disease, Big Data, Adolescent Mental Health and Disorders and Big Data Driven Management and Decision, and AI. CUHK Holds Campus Lecture Series on Building A Country, Building A Future Dream
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the Campus Seminar Series on “Building A Country, Building A Future Dream” on 28 October. The seminar was given by Mr. Zhao Yuan-Chao, Chief Architect of China Northwest Architectural Design and Research Institute, and known as the “Great Artisan Master”. At CUHK Cho Yiu Hall, Mr. Zhao talked about the development process and outstanding achievements of architectures in China. Mr. Laurie Pearcey, Associate Vice-President (External Engagement and Outreach), hosted the seminar which attracted more than 100 CUHK academic members and students.
With the theme of “From Humanistic Architecture to Landscape City, Urban Culture Shaping and Quality Improvement”, Mr. Zhao started his seminar from the architectural practice in Western China, discussing the relationship between architecture and land, city and people, with architectural examples from Yan’an and Xi’an to illustrate the balance of the modernity of buildings in the urban space with traditional cultural heritage. Mr. Zhao also interacted with participants on site and shared with them the subtle relationship between environment and architecture as how to learn and appreciate art within architecture.
CUHK President Speaks at the World University Presidents Forum for Shandong University’s 120th Anniversary Celebration
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), delivered a speech at World University Presidents Forum on 14 October for the 120th Anniversary of Shandong University. The Forum invited the presidents of 17 well-known universities in China and overseas to jointly discuss the significance of international exchanges between universities and the future of higher education. Participants focused on the three topics of the Forum, namely, “International Collaboration in the Post-Pandemic Era”, ” The Role of the University in Cultural Exchange and Shared Development of Humanity”, and ” The University as a Driver of Regional Innovation and Development”, to discuss the future development of higher education.
Under the theme of “Higher Education for a Shared Future: Addressing Global Challenges”, the Forum provided a platform for the participants to share ideas on the trends and challenges of global higher education development. Prof. Tuan remarked that COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated that the world is a global village with common needs, where universities need to shoulder their responsibilities under the crisis circumstances. Prof. Tuan also shared CUHK strategic plan for 2021-2025 with a clear roadmap to strengthen the cooperation with stakeholders in various countries or regions, in order to further develop the partnerships to address challenges, contributing to the well-being of the global community to social and environmental challenges.
Shandong University and CUHK have joined hands to develop a range of joint projects in nursing, reproductive medicine and social sciences, including student interflow, academic exchange and research collaboration. In 2013, a Joint Research Laboratory on Reproductive Genetics was established. Professor Tuan joined the 120th anniversary celebration activities, indicating the joint efforts to promote further development of higher education.
CUHK President Participates in the Ningbo University's Anniversary Celebration
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), was invited to join the “Chinese and Foreign University Presidents Forum” at the 35th Anniversary of Ningbo University (NBU) on 30 October 2021. He gave a speech at the Forum entitled “Innovation, Development and Service of Universities”, sharing the experience, development and visions of CUHK with the introduction of 2021-2025 strategic plan specifically concerning the blueprints for scientific research and innovation, student services and academic exchange with partners from around the world.
CUHK established links with NBU since 2011 when a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing the Li Dak Sum Academic Exchange Fund for Collaboration was signed to support academic and student interflow, as well as research and training between the two universities.
CUHK CCOUC Delegation Visits Sister Unit at Fudan University
The Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response (CCOUC) and Integrated Research on Disaster Risk International Centre of Excellence on Risk Interconnectivity and Governance on Weather/Climate Extremes Impact and Public Health (IRDR-ICoE-RIG-WECEIPHE) of Fudan University (FDU) conducted a meeting on 1 December to discuss future cooperation plans between the two parties.
The meeting was held both offline and online. Professor Emily Chan, Director of CCOUC and IRDR ICoE in Health and Community Resilience (IRDR ICoE-CCOUC), Professor of the JC School of Public Health and Primary Medical Care and Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at CUHK, led a delegation and, together with online members, introduced the works of CCOUC and IRDR ICoE-CCOUC at the meeting. Professor Chan participated in the international Seminar on Air Quality and Health hosted by FDU IRDR ICoE on 30 November 2021 and delivered a keynote speech entitled “Climate Change and Public Health”.
In the next two years, the two IRDR ICoEs will conduct exchanges and research cooperation, including joint webinars and co-writing research grant proposals, to explore research and education on climate change, disasters and health, so as to strengthen China’s contributions and influence in related academic fields and international platforms. This is another significant collaboration between CUHK and FDU after the establishment of the CUHK-FDU Joint Research Centre in Life and Biomedical Sciences on 30 June 2021.
IRDR is an international research programme co-sponsored by the International Science Council (ISC) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). It aims to deal with the challenges brought about by natural hazards, mitigate their impacts, and improve related policy-making practices. The IRDR ICoE-CCOUC was established in November 2016, focusing on Heath Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (Health-EDRM), climate change and health, global health and humanitarian medicine, disaster risk perception, human health security, and disaster case studies in the Asia-Pacific region.
CUHK VC Speaks at The First Xili Lake Forum
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Rocky Tuan participated in the World University Presidents Forum under the Xili Lake Forum on 28 December, to share the experience of CUHK in industry-university-research development and innovative talents training. The theme of the World University Presidents Forum was “Cultivation of Innovative Talents under the National Talent Strategy in the New Era”. The Forum provided an integrated platform for exchange and promoted the synergy of the training of innovative talents for the presidents of world-class universities.
In his speech themed “Cultivating International Innovative Talents”, President Tuan gave an overview of CUHK’s recent developments in research and knowledge transfer, and talent cultivation which included a newly launched Co-operative Education Programme. Through an extended 6 to 8 months of placement, the Programme aims to foster in students an elevated workplace professionalism and the spirit of self-evaluation for continuous advancement with more in-depth experience of innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Xili Lake Forum, was co-organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of the People’s Republic of China and Shenzhen Municipal Government. With the theme of “Innovation and Sustainable Development”, it was committed to create platforms for exchange of science and technological achievements, and showcase of cutting-edge technology. It has received strong support from MOST and Governments of Guangdong Province and HKSAR as a signature event in the Greater Bay Area in innovation and entrepreneurship.
CUHK Co-Organizes the 25th International Conference on Yue Dialects
The 25th International Conference on Yue Dialects was co-organized online by the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance for Chinese (GHMUAC) and T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) from December 18 to 19, 2021.
A total of 106 speakers from China and overseas presented their papers in eight sessions on various topics, including phonetics, sound systems, lexicology, morphology, syntax, discourse analysis, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, the use of Cantonese and applied linguistics. Over one hundred participants joined the event and exchanged ideas regardless of time and space.
A special workshop focusing on the sentence-final particles in Cantonese was held to foster fruitful discussions on issues in terms of syntactic and prosodic properties, semantic functions, classification, language acquisition, and origins.
CUHK Participates in AI Education Forum of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) participated in the first “Artificial Intelligence Education Forum of Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan”. The event was held at South China Normal University (SCNU) during 18-19 December online and offline. Professor Wong Kam Fai, Associate Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Professor of Department of Systems Engineering & Engineering Management and Director of Centre for Innovation and Technology, joined the online forum and delivered a speech on behalf of CUHK.
The Forum invited well-known experts and scholars from Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as well as frontline teachers of primary and secondary schools for participation. Prof. Wong gave the speech entitled “The Relationships between AI (Artificial Intelligence) and HI (Human)”. A total of more than 3,000 people participated in the event online and offline, with wide positive comments.
