CUHK Organizes the Second Greater Bay Area Summer School
Following the success of the first Greater Bay Area Summer School (GBASS) held in 2020, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) organized the second CUHK GBASS under the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance Summer School Series, during 2-13 August 2021. A total of 55 undergraduate students from the Greater Bay Area participated in the programme. Students who met the course requirements were awarded with the respective credits.
With the aim of strengthening cooperation and provision of quality education in the Greater Bay Area, CUHK first established GBASS in 2020 to offer online credit-bearing courses. Participating students are provided with the opportunity to broaden their horizons and actively communicate through the knowledge learning. This year, GBASS offered three courses, namely, Reading Humanity, Reading Nature and a newly introduced English course Understanding Ecotourism. Students enjoyed the summer school and here are some of their experience sharing:
The programme deepened my understanding of ecotourism and broadened my knowledge of the current eco-tourism industry in mainland China and Hong Kong. Professor Johnson Chan used the planning and layout of the ecotourism industry as a starting point to explore a sustainable, green and healthy economic model. Some of us encountered some difficulties in speaking in English, but the teacher listened patiently and enthusiastically to us and encouraged us to express our opinions. This greatly improved our oral English level.
(Student of Understanding Ecotourism, Zeng Runjia of Guangdong University of Technology)
When studying Ethics, the teacher guided us to explore the value of life through the wonderful meaning of happiness, that is, a life that makes full use of rationality. During the course, I gained the most from reading the classics seriously, and opened the perspective of appreciating and analyzing the classics, so that I can step into the philosophical world. In the future, I will continue to read and think critically with what I have learned, taking into account the essence of Chinese and Western philosophy, and continue to improve myself.
(Student of Reading Humanity, Wang Yuanjiang of Shenzhen University)
The course is challenging. We have to read a lot of books in a short period of time, such as “The Utopia, Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica, etc., and also have group discussions to express our views on the teacher’s questions; at the same time, this class is fun. The teacher helped us to interpret these books. We found many intriguing sentences in these masterpieces and enjoyed the fun of deep thinking.
(Student of Reading Nature student, Shen Yile of South China University of Technology)

Chinese Academy of Sciences – CUHK Research Internship Programme in Major Scientific Research Infrastructure Held Successfully
In order to strengthen the cooperation and exchanges between The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and to provide CUHK research students with internship opportunities at the top scientific and research bases in China, the China Engagement Office joined hand with CAS to launch a Research Internship Programme in Major Scientific Research Infrastructure. From 1 June to 30 July, three PhD students from the Department of Physics of CUHK successfully completed their internship training at the Chinese Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) of the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics. Apart from getting to know the cutting-edge research facilities and equipment, the students also obtained knowledge in recent research development to further study. Below are the sharing from the students:
I have learned a lot at CSNS. I know more about the neutron detection technology and gain a deeper understanding of the application of neutron technology. This will be of great help to my future research and study.
(Department of Physics Year 1 PhD student Liu Heng)
The two-month internship at CSNS has been very fruitful. I am very happy to have participated in this programme. I hope that there will be more opportunities in internships and learning in the future.
(Department of Physics Year 1 PhD student Xu Luhang)
CUHK has been in close collaboration with CAS in academic exchange and joint research projects since the partnership establishment in 1980s. Apart from the State Key Laboratories and Joint Laboratories, the two institutions joined hands with Shenzhen Municipal Government to establish SIAT in 2006 to advance the research development in the region.
CUHK Greater Bay Area Internship Programme Completed
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Greater Bay Area Internship Programme was successfully held during June to August 2021. A total of 6 students completed their internship in Shenzhen and Zhuhai. The Programme offers valuable opportunities to CUHK students to apply their knowledge and skills as well as explore career development prospects in the Greater Bay Area. Below are the sharing from three students:
During the two-month internship, I received guidance from supervisors, colleagues and teachers. I have always believed that business students should seek exploration and growth in practice. Through this internship experience, I learned a lot of skills from my colleagues and the work they have done that can be applied in my future career.
(Integrated Bachelor of Business Administration Programme Year 1 bachelor student Fang Lexi)
I saw the broad prospects of the economic development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area from this internship. This experience gave me an opportunity to combine the knowledge I learned in the university with practice, which is beneficial to my future study and work. In addition, this internship also taught me how to deal with interpersonal relationships and I was very fortunate to meet many wonderful people.
(Integrated Bachelor of Business Administration Programme Year 2 bachelor student Lu Jiarui)
This internship gives me far more than knowledge and experience. Before this internship, I didn’t have clear career planning. After this internship, I plan to return to private equity industry in the future.
(Economics Year 2 bachelor student Zhai Yunxiao)
