CUHK Professor Receives Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award of Universities (Humanities and Social Sciences)
Professor Lai Chi Tim, Director of Center for the Studies of Daoist Culture and Associate Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received the second prize of the 8th Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences). Professor Lai’s award-winning book is titled “Cultivating the Mind and Refining Nature-Lu Zu’s Interpretation of the Supreme Metaphysical Spiritual Scripture (Vernacular Annotation).
With the purpose to commend and reward the outstanding achievements of scholars in philosophy and social science, the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China specially sets up the Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award (Humanities and Social Sciences) of Universities to showcase the achievements in social sciences of universities and the major theoretical and practical accomplishments relating to the development of the country.
CUHK Professor Becomes First Hong Kong Scholar Elected Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors
Professor Peiyong Jiang from the Department of Chemical Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has been elected a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), in recognition of his inventive work in biomedical technologies to contribute to the welfare of society. He is the first scholar from Hong Kong institution to receive this senior membership. With a multidisciplinary background in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology and statistics, Professor Jiang has a long-standing research interest in next generation sequencing-based bioinformatics data analysis as well as its clinical applications such as non-invasive prenatal testing and cancer detection.
In addition to his academic excellence, Professor JIANG has demonstrated remarkable success in innovation, turning ideas into clinical realities that support physicians and their patients. He is a co-inventor in more than 60 granted patents, including a new class of prenatal and cancer diagnostic markers that are based on DNA methylation. Taking advantage of the methylation patterns of plasma DNA, Professor Jiang’s team has developed a novel bioinformatics platform for non-invasive screening of multiple types of cancer, e.g. liver cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer.
CUHK Vice-Chancellor and CUHK Professor Named Fellows of Orthopaedic Research Society
Professor Rocky S. Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and Professor LI Gang, Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine at CUHK, have been named 2021 Fellows of the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS). Being the first scholars in Hong Kong to earn this prestigious honour, they are recognised by the ORS for their outstanding achievements in the field of musculoskeletal research and contributions to the ORS.
Specialising in skeletal tissue engineering and regeneration, Professor Tuan has a distinguished research track record that covers basic science and engineering, as well as translational and clinical applications. He has integrated “smart” biomaterial and bioengineering technologies with stem cells to develop translational applications for the repair and regeneration of human tissues. He has recently engineered the first-ever “microJoint”, a three dimensional joint-on-a-chip, to replicate a human joint using a microbioreactor platform. which will be used to study and screen for potential therapeutic agents for debilitating joint diseases.
Professor Gang Li has a longstanding research interest in the biology of stem cells, biological mechanisms of fracture healing and limb lengthening techniques, and their innovative clinical applications. He is one of the leading scientists in the world on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). The research team led by Professor Li focuses on the biology and application of MSCs in the repair of bone, cartilage and tendon, and studies on bone and cartilage regeneration, distraction osteogenesis and novel biomaterials.
CUHK Receives Funding to Promote Youth Entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) received support from the Funding Scheme for Youth Entrepreneurship in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) under the Youth Development Fund, taking a step furthering its entrepreneurial encouragement to local youngsters. At a press conference marking the inauguration of the Scheme on 26 February, Professor Sham Mai Har, CUHK Pro-Vice-Chancellor, received a certificate from the Chief Executive Mrs. Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor in recognition of the University’s long-term commitment to fostering youth entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area.
CUHK has been participating in the collaboration connecting academia, research and industry in the Greater Bay Area as earlier as in 2006 when the University partnered with the Shenzhen municipal government and the China Academy of Sciences. CUHK has established the InnoHub in Shenzhen Research Institute and a pre-incubation centre in Foshan, continuously providing new platforms and a wide range of incubation services for CUHK members for development and research opportunities in the area. Under the Scheme, CUHK will offer up to HK$600,000 to successful teams of students and academic members to launch and expand their businesses in the area. The teams will be provided with practical training, mentorship support and business opportunities to explore the GBA market via CUHK’s start-up base at InnoHub in SZRI and the pre-incubation centre in Foshan.
