Health Care

The scope of the health care industry is wide – comprising not only the doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other trained professionals who provide treatment and prescribe medication, but also a large number of administrative support personnel who are essential to providing efficient and effective medical services.    

Employers include public hospitals and institutions and private hospitals in Hong Kong, as well as the HKSAR government which provides a number of community health services.

In addition to technical skills and qualifications, a compassionate heart and genuine concern for the welfare of others are essential for success in this area of work.

 

Doctors and Medical Specialists

Graduates of the MB ChB programme will need to complete the mandatory one-year internship (guided clinical practice) and fulfill the requirements of the Medical Council of Hong Kong in order to become registered medical practitioners who may then practice in Hong Kong.

Medical specialist training is governed by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. In order to become a specialist, a further minimum six years of supervised specialist training in accredited training centres is required, after which the trainee must obtain a pass in the relevant final examinations held by the Academy.

Nursing

To practise as a registered nurse in Hong Kong, an individual will need to complete formal training as student nurse or pupil nurse recognised by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (the Council), pass the examinations conducted by the Council and obtain the Certificate of Enrollment or Practising Certificate issued by the Council.

Graduates of CUHK’s Bachelor of Nursing programme are qualified upon graduation to work in community and hospital settings. Graduates with good results may also pursue postgraduate studies which will subsequently lead to promotion as nurse specialists, clinical managers, administrators or educators.
