Dr. Allen Lee received Best Poster Award in the 15th International Congress of the Asian Society Against Dementia (ASAD2021)
Dr. Allen Lee’s abstract titled “Structured frontal lobe based computerized cognitive stimulation to older adults with subjective cognitive complaints and comorbid depression symptoms” was one of the 18 posters selected for oral presentation in the 15th International Congress of the Asian Society Against Dementia (ASAD2021), which was held in a hybrid format in November 2021 in Sendai, Japan.
Dr. Lee’s oral presentation was well received by the audience from Japan and around the world and was subsequently awarded for the Best Poster Award.
His abstract described the positive preliminary findings of his pilot randomized controlled trial of structured frontal lobe based computerized cognitive training in older adults with depression but without mild cognitive impairment or dementia. This pilot study was supported by the CUHK Direct Grant for Research, where Dr. Lee was the Principal Investigator. A larger, longer and more in-depth study could potentially generate the much-needed clinical and scientific evidence of computerized cognitive training being an effective alternative or adjuvant intervention for depression in older adults.

CUHK Study Proves Genetically Predicted Short Sleep Duration Rather Than Long Sleep Duration as a Potential Causal Risk Factor for Many Cardiovascular Diseases
Sleep is vital to individual’s cardiovascular health. A handful of observational studies have suggested that both short (≤ 6 hours) and long (≥ 9 hours) sleep durations are associated with many cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, traditional observational studies, even they are well designed, prospective with large sample sizes, are prone to be biased by residual confounding effects and reverse causation. Therefore, the causal associations between sleep duration and CVDs remains unclear.
Research team from the Li Chiu Kong Family Sleep Assessment Unit, at the Department of Psychiatry, led by Professor Yun-Kwok Wing, performed a study entitled “Causal associations of short and long sleep durations with 12 cardiovascular diseases: linear and nonlinear Mendelian randomization analyses in UK Biobank”. In collaboration with several institutes, including Peking University, Sichuan University, etc, we employed linear and nonlinear Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to investigate the causal associations of short and long sleep durations with 12 cardiovascular diseases in UK Biobank. We found that genetically predicted sleep duration was associated with arterial hypertension, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary embolism, and chronic ischaemic heart disease. Complementary analyses provided confirmative evidence of the adverse effects of genetically predicted short sleep duration on the risks of 5 out of the 12 CVDs, including arterial hypertension, pulmonary embolism, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and chronic ischaemic heart disease. However, genetically predicted long sleep duration was not associated with any CVD. The findings of this study have significant implications in the prevention of CVDs. These results suggested that increasing sleep duration among those with short sleep duration may promote cardiovascular health for them, while simply reducing sleep per se is not likely to improve cardiovascular health in people with long sleep duration (Graphical Abstract).
This project was supported by the Impact Postdoctoral Fellowship Scheme of The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
These novel findings have been published in the European Heart Journal (Impact factor: 22.673; Rank: 2/138 in the field of CARDIAC & CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEMS).

CUHK-HKU-UL Conducts World’s First Insomnia Prevention Programme and Proves Insomnia is Preventable in At-risk Adolescents
Adolescence is a critical period accompanied by dramatic neurobiological, physical, behavioural and emotional changes, predisposing the youngsters to sleep disorders, mental and physical illnesses. It is a vulnerable period for the emergence of insomnia, affecting 10% to 36% of the adolescents. Insomnia once developed, tends to run a chronic course with considerable personal distress and health care burden.

CUHK-HKU Study Proves Bright Light Therapy as an Adjunctive Treatment Improves Outcomes in Depressed “Night Owl” Patients
Depression is among the most common mental health problems. About 1 in 10 adults in Hong Kong suffer from depressive symptoms. There is growing research suggesting a close relationship between mood disorders and the biological clock. “Night owls”, refers those who are late to bed and late to rise, are at greater risk of poor clinical outcomes with more sleep disturbances and depressive symptoms. The Department of Psychiatry of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU Medicine), in collaboration with the Department of Psychology of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), have conducted the world’s first randomised controlled trial of adjunctive bright light therapy for “night owls” with depression. Results showed bright light therapy doubles the probability of achieving remission, and the cumulative remission rate of depression reaches 67.4%. MORE

Findings of LANDSCAPE project gets published in the top journal of rehabilitation
Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis techniques have greatly contributed to detect the anatomical changes in age-related neurodegenerative diseases. With the fast development of transcranial brain stimulation, MRI-based morphometry is increasingly being applied to construct head model and optimize stimulation protocols. For years, converging evidence has accumulated on the clinical trials of brain stimulation, yet, the variability in morphometry limits the application and interpretation at individual level.
In a recent study of research team from the Neuromodulation Lab at the Department of Psychiatry, led by Research Assistant Professor Dr. LU Hanna, performed a study entitled “Localized Analysis of Normalized Distance from Scalp to Cortex and Personalized Evaluation (LANDSCAPE)”. Beyond age-related effects, we focused on ageing effect on region-specific cortical complexity and scalp-to-cortex distance (SCD). We found pronounced ageing effect on the SCD of left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), not primary motor cortex (M1) in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) converters. The SCD change of left DLPFC from baseline to 3-year follow-up demonstrated better performance to discriminate MCI converters from normal ageing adults than the other morphometric features. The novel findings have been published in the Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation (Rank: 2/115 in the field of Rehabilitation).
Significance of the study: The findings of this study have significant implications in morphometric imaging and precision medicine. Firstly, the identification of SCD in MCI converters that region-specific SCD may be used as a novel imaging biomarker for the early detection of dementia; meanwhile, offering valuable information to optimize the dosage of brain stimulation. Secondly, the newly developed method to quantify the SCD-related electric field changes (i.e., information entropy) may help to improve realistic head model, advancing precision medicine for neurodegenerative diseases in clinical trials (Figure 1).

Scientific and medical advancements are closely intertwined, psychiatry is no exception. The addition of neuroscience to the department is recent but well primed – guided by our strong track record in community and clinical psychiatry, neuroscience could broaden our scope in investigating psychiatric illness, it also brings novel perspectives in our understanding of clinical phenomena and paves the road to novel intervention and treatment. This completes our department’s multi-pronged approach aiming at easing the sufferings of those who are mentally ill.
With a highly diverse but cooperative departmental structure, we hope our joined forces would steer one step further towards relieving the burdens of psychiatric illness.
