ITSC keeps seeking opportunities to strengthen the connection with International research & education (R&E) network in order to facilitate academic and research collaborations with other universities or institutions globally.
We have a 10 Gigabit Ethernet Shared Connection to CSTNet, ASGCNet, KREONET, CNGI and TEIN3.
CSTNET is a nationwide network for scientific and technical communities, relevant government departments and hi-tech enterprises. It provides services such as network access, host trusteeship, virtual host and domain name registration etc. With over ten years development, CSTNET becomes one of the top large-scale networks in China and is one of the key roles in the development of China Internet Industry. Its 12 sub centers cover more than 20 provinces in China. Linked to more than 100 research institutes of CAS and other scientific and technical communities in China, CSTNet has more than 1,000,000 end users.
ITSC has a high speed (i.e. gigabit Ethernet) local circuit connecting CSTNet via HKIX. This connection provides resilience and additional bandwidth for academic and research collaborations.
Grid Computing Centre in Academia Sinica (ASGC) is a non-funded member of the EGEE (Enabling Grid for E-sciencE) project supported by European Union and is growing to be a world-wide science grid. ASGC is also the coordinator of the Asia Pacific Federation in EGEE for the moment. It is devoted to build the next generation research infrastructure and induct more applications such as Digital Archives, Atmospheric Sciences and Bio-medicine, etc. into the World-wide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) middleware infrastructure.
The high speed (10GE) local circuit connected to the ASGCNet enables direct academic and research collaboration with Taiwan institutions with the high speed connection and GRID technology.
KRONET, a research network of Korea supported by the Korean government, has over 250 member organizations of different research institutes and has strong IPv6 connection in Korea. KREONET is managed by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) – the national supercomputing center of Korea – which leads many nation-wide research activities such as Grid computing initiatives. This connection greatly enhances the network communication functions between CUHK and the research and education institutions in Korea.
CNGI-6IX, the national/international NGI exchange center has been established in Tsinghua University, Beijing. It will provide 1~10Gbps interconnection for NGI in the country, and 45-155 Mbps interconnection for NGI in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific Region, as well as other countries and regions.
The third generation of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN3) provides a dedicated high-capacity Internet network for research and education communities across Asia-Pacific. TEIN3 already connects researchers and academics in China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Australia. Bangladesh, Bhutan and Cambodia are in the process of getting connected, bringing the total number of partners involved in TEIN3 to 19.
With direct connectivity to Europe’s GÉANT network, TEIN3 offers Asia-Pacific a gateway for global collaboration, enabling over 45 million users at more than 8000 research and academic centres to participate in joint projects with their peers in Europe and other parts of the world.
