Abstract
In traditional African societies, theatre functioned as an effective cultural mechanism through which group identities were negotiated, framed and communicated. Theatre provided the critical arena for socialization, education, and regulation of human conducts. With the advent of colonialism, new entertainment forms were introduced, which now cohabit with indigenous African theatre modes. Later, globalization emerged to pose greater challenge to the already distorted cultural order by diffusing or out-rightly dislodging long established group identities and patterns of social relations. Through modern technologies, post-modernist consumption habits, spectacles and Eurocentric stereotypes are transmitted directly into the living rooms of urbanized Africans. This has exposed Africans to cultural disorientation, identity crises, economic exploitation, dehumanization, and underdevelopment. Contemporary African dramatists and theatre makers have responded in different ways to this challenge of cultural denigration, imperialist exploitation and stunted development occasioned first by colonialism, globalization and bad governance. This seminar examines the role of globalization in the systematic obliteration of traditions, histories, and cultural values that define African societies as distinct from other intervening civilizations. It interrogates how contemporary African theatre negotiates the threat posed by globalization to authentic African identities and age-long societal values in favor of European hegemony. The conclusion challenges the blanket framing of African culture as antithetical to development; rather it identifies culture as one of the areas Africa has comparative advantage, which humanity could derive benefits from.
