CUHK boasts the first and foremost climate change museum in the world. In December 2013, as climate threat had increasingly dominated global attention, CUHK established the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change (MoCC) with a generous donation from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (HKJC) to communicate knowledge about climate change and promote climate-friendly behaviour. The MoCC has since been CUHK’s flagship community outreach initiative advocating for sustainability education. Since its inception, the museum has hosted over one million exhibition visitors and served millions of members of the public through its off-site educational activities and events that focus on SDG 13, Climate Action. Featured in the International Journal of Marketing Studies as ‘an insightful, educational, influential, informative, interactive and important museum’, the MoCC is a testimonial of CUHK’s commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development.

Building networks for positive change

CUHK values partnerships and collective action in pursuing sustainable development. In 2018, responding to SDG 17, Partnerships for the Goals, CUHK joined hands with HKJC to launch the Hong Kong Chapter of the United Nations’ SDSN, a global community of 40 chapters and over 1,400 institutional members promoting practical solutions for sustainable development, including the implementation of the SDGs and the Paris Climate Agreement. SDSN Hong Kong mobilises expertise and resources from different sectors to address the most pressing environmental, social and economic issues and facilitate the understanding and ownership of the SDGs in Hong Kong. It has contributed one of the eight best solutions in the SDSN Global Solutions Forum 2020, showcasing how an age-friendly city effectively responds to a range of the SDGs, from SDG 3, Good Health and Well-being, to SDG 16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

SDSN Hong Kong focuses resources on actionable and solution-based goals that would lead to tangible, sustainable deliverables.

The pursuit of sustainability is one of the greatest challenges of our time. CUHK has set concrete sustainable development targets, which align with the SDGs. Its determination to discharge its wider social responsibilities to advance the SDGs will be at the forefront of the University’s next five-year vision. CUHK will be setting a fine example for others to follow, both here in Hong Kong and in the wider regional and global community.
