CUHK participates in APRU Global Health Conference

Organised by the University of Southern California and Fudan University, the 2020 Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) Global Health Conference was held virtually in October. Themed ‘Universal Healthcare across the Lifecourse’, the conference attracted over 2,700 global health leaders, researchers, policymakers, and students from 53 countries. Dr. Margaret Chan, Inaugural Dean of the Vanke School of Public Health at Tsinghua University and Emeritus Director General of the World Health Organisation was the keynote speaker. Panels were held to discuss universal health coverage, ageing, life course, migration, women, and COVID-19.

Prof. Emily Chan and Prof. Martin Wong of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at CUHK addressed at the COVID-19 panel in the conference. They spoke on home care in Hong Kong and managing non-communicable diseases during the COVID-19 pandemic. To revisit the conference, please click here.

During the conference, the results of the 5th APRU Global Health Student Case Competition were announced. This year’s challenge ‘Improving Elderly Care in the Asia-Pacific’ drew 45 teams from 22 universities to compete for proposing the most realistic, well-designed, and innovative solution for the challenge. Two CUHK student teams achieved good results at the competition. Team Toilet Paper Hoggers, a group of medical students entered the top three, while Team Medeavour, a group of students from the School of Biomedical Sciences was one of three runner-up teams.

‘This competition has prompted us to think beyond the causes of diseases and look at factors that impact the quality of life. Population ageing is a major concern in Hong Kong and this contest has driven us to think more to address the problem,’ shared a representative from Team Toilet Paper Hoggers.
