Organised by the Department of Social Work, the Sharing Session on “Self-Determination of People with Intellectual Disabilities” was successfully held on 28 May 2021 via the online platform. More than 500 participants from the disability and special education fields as well as tertiary institutions participated in this session.

We are honoured to have Professor Phyllis King-shui Wong, Assistant Professor from the Department, to deliver a keynote speech. Professor Wong introduced the development of self-determination concepts and the related studies in both international and local fields. She also elaborated the principles, the core elements and the practical interventions to enhance the self-determination competencies of people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, two co-workers from a NGO were invited to share their practical experience and gains in the pilot study.

Over 90% of the participants scored very satisfactory/satisfactory to the content and arrangement of the seminar. They found the seminar inspiring and able to enhance their knowledge about self-determination. They are looking forward to more self-determination-related seminars in relation to people with intellectual disabilities in the future.
