Nicholas G. Hall , Berry Professor, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University | 24th President of INFORMS

It is with great sorrow that I learned of the passing of Prof. Duan Li, for many years a true leader within the Hong Kong operations research community. Since my first visit to the SEEM Department of Chinese University in 1995, and including my most recent visit in 2019, it was my pleasure to meet Duan many times. On all such occasions, his keen intellect, unfailing modesty, kindness and generosity were on full display. His remarkable research productivity, including 200 top quality refereed publications, continued until the end of his outstanding career. As Department Chair of SEEM from 2003 to 2012, he built the best operations research department in Hong Kong and mentored many outstanding young scholars. To relate a small personal story, on a recent visit I asked him if he could offer some technical advice, not knowing that he was leaving for a meeting in Guangzhou the next morning; however, he kindly rearranged his schedule to spend an early morning hour with me at his office before leaving. It was my pleasure to know Duan, and he will be greatly missed.
