This course is designed to enhance students’ awareness and knowledge of different types of families with special needs. It aims to develop students’ competence in working with different types of families and handling different family issues. Students will lead to overview the characteristics of families with special needs (e.g., single parent families, step families, reunion families and families with members encountered emotional disturbances); explore the existing resources and discuss the policies which address the special needs of these families in Hong Kong; and investigate the intervention strategies and skills in helping these families. Selected critical issues in family and parent education such as gender and class effect will be studied in-depth and its implications for practice will be addressed.
