Course Description | This course introduces students to some fundamental philosophical ideas underlying education and some basic concepts in understanding societal roles of schooling. In particular, five major roles will be underscored for further discussion: first, schooling is a means of improving one’s social and economic conditions and is thus meant for social mobility; second, schooling actually reproduces class inequality; third, schooling is meant for transmitting appropriate cultural and societal norms and values to the next generation and is thus meant for socialization; fourth, schooling mainly conveys the ideology of the ruling class for the sake of social/political governance and is thus meant for social control; and fifth, schooling could liberate students from ignorance and is meant for empowering students to become agents of social change and is thus meant for social change. Students will be guided to look into each societal role of schooling critically. | ||
