Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements:
1. Level 2 in five subjects in Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination including Chinese Language and English Language, or equivalent; or
2. Pass in one A Level or two AS Level plus five passes in HKCEE including Level 2 / Grade E in Chinese Language and English Language, or equivalent; or
3. Satisfactory completion of the Yi Jin Diploma Programme; or
4. Aged 21 or above.

Objectives

With a focus on a person-centred recovery model, this Programme aims to achieve the following objectives:
(1) provides participants with knowledge and skills in the principles and practices of psychosocial rehabilitation ;
(2) assists participants to develop abilities in supporting people with a mental illness to live in a recovery-oriented environment and re-integrate into society;
(3) facilitate participants to develop, co-ordinate and implement the delivery of direct social, recreational, volunteer programmes and services to clients in need.

Programme Structure and Duration

There are 6 modules with a total of 99 contact hours which can be completed in about 15 months by part-time study mode.

Module 1: Understanding Mental Health Problems (21 hours)
Module 2: Child and Adolescent Mental Health (18 hours)
Module 3: Common Mental Disorders Among Adults (9 hours)
Module 4: Introduction to Dementia (9 hours)
Module 5: Helping Relationships in Community Mental Health (21 hours)
Module 6: Project on Community Mental Health (21 hours)

Module 1: Understanding Mental Health Problems

This module aims to provide an overview of mental health problems, with a focus on recognizing the models of distress and a variety of types of mental illness and symptoms. The training of mental health first aid will also be provided to facilitate participants’ understanding of the risk factors and warning signs of a mental illness or substance use disorder. How to respond to the illness or disorder, and identify community resources for supporting individuals in need will also be the focus.

Module 2: Child and Adolescent Mental Health

This module introduces to participants signs and symptoms which would interfere with child’s and adolescent’s daily life. Participants will study the way to recognize and address a wide range of issues experienced by children and young people at their different points of life. Community support to parents and carers working with children and young people who have difficulties with their emotional or behavioural wellbeing will also be explored.

Module 3: Common Mental Disorders Among Adults

This module aims to examine issues in the identification and assessment of common mental disorders in adulthood. Participants will discern causes and symptoms of self-perceived and clinically assessed mental disorders among adults. They may also understand the significance of health promotion and community intervention in enhancing the well-being of adults in their day-to-day living.

Module 4: Introduction to Dementia

This module aims to introduce to participants symptoms, causes, diagnosis, risks and treatments of Dementia and the difference between Dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Module 5: Helping Relationships in Community Mental Health

This module deals with the topic of relating mental wellness to recovery, the application of strength perspective and recovery concept in supporting clients with mental health problems or recovered from mental illness. Participants will explore the ingredients of a helping relationship and develop helping skills in facilitating the recovery process of clients in need.

Module 6: Project on Community Mental Health

The module aims to consolidate students’ knowledge and skills in the planning and organizing a community-based recovery programme for clients with mental health problems or mental illness.

Attendance

A minimum of 70% attendance in each module, including practicum, is required.

Award of Certificatre

Participants will be awarded the “Certificate in Community Mental Health and Recovery” upon fulfilling the following requirements:
1. Have an attendance rate of 70% or above in each course; and
2. Have passed the assessment of each course.
