Programme Description

This programme is designed to emphasize four important elements of the profession: management skills, critical thinking, creativity and a global view. The programme provides an overview on the operation of cultural organizations of different scales, at both local and international levels, with highlights on effective management skills in order to achieve better organizational planning and strategies. More importantly, students are encouraged to develop an attitude of accepting new ideas and to have their own perspectives. In the programme, students will be provided opportunities to cultivate more insights by sharing ideas and researching in critical topics and to apply their ideas and creativity in the project, which can help prepare themselves for further studies or professional advancement in the art and cultural fields. Programme Content

Module 1: Concepts of Contemporary Culture (40 hours)
This module introduces specific theoretical perspectives and concepts of cultural studies. By looking into selected areas of interests in cultural studies, including representation, ideology, power and subjectivity, students will be guided to survey how culture is shaped and our role in the shaping of cultural practices in everyday life.

Module 2: Visual Arts and Performing Arts: Theories and Practice (40 hours)
Visual arts and performing arts are two major areas of cultural activities. This module provides basic training with fundamental theories, operation and practices of visual arts and performing arts administration in cultural aspects. Through lectures, case studies, discussions and assignments, students are guided to have a broad understanding of arts activities in the community so as to employ a critical and creative approach in assessing the arts environments and cultural policies in Hong Kong and other major cities in Asia.

Module 3: Managing Cultural Organizations: Operation and Administration (40 hours)
This module introduces different aspects of managing non-profit arts organization, including fundraising, financial management, audience development, etc. Through lecture, experience sharing, in-class practice and discussion, students will be guided to gain a thorough understanding of the strategic level as well as operational knowledge about arts management, to compare and evaluate these practices as well as to identify the professional qualities required by different cultural organizations.

Module 4: Managing Cultural Organizations: Planning and Communication (40 hours)
This module introduces the planning of cultural events of different scales. Students will be guided to examine the areas of financial planning, logistic arrangement and communication strategies in cultural organizations management. Lessons will be conducted in the style such as field trips or guest talks. Communication plans and strategies will be discussed through case studies.

Module 5: Critical Approaches to Cultural Issues (40 hours)
This module engages students to review and discuss various cultural issues encountered in our everyday life. Through guided discussions, students will explore and critically evaluate the cultural significance of issues concerning sex and gender, ethnicity, consumption and mass media, and deepen their understanding of our cultural ecology locally and globally.

Admission Requirements

1) A minimum of 5 subjects with Level 2 in HKDSE or a minimum of 5 passes in HKCEE or equivalent; or
2) Mature applicants at the age of 21 or above who do not meet the above minimum admission requirements but possess a demonstrated ability (e.g. good presentation skills or relevant working experience in art organizations) to pursue the programme.

Award of Certificate

To be considered for the award of the Diploma in Cultural Management, a student shall
- have at least 70% attendance in each module;
- have passed the assessments of all required modules

Application Procedure

Please complete the 'Enrolment Form for Certificate and Diploma/Professional Programmes' in Block Letters. An application for admission must include the following:

1. Photocopies of relevant qualifications;
2. Tuition fee and an Application fee (This is non-refunable and non-transferable under any circumstances)

Applications should be mailed or submitted in person to SCS head office or enrolment centres.
(Your application will NOT be processed if copies of documents required are not enclosed.)

1. Crossed cheque or bank draft, made payable to 'The Chinese University of Hong Kong'. Application fee and the tuition fee should be paid in separate cheque or bank draft.
2. Visa or Master Card ONLY. Please include the card holder's name, card number, expiry date and signature in the Enrolment Form.
