《修心煉性 ── 〈呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經〉白話註譯》
《呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經》(簡稱《靈妙真經疏解》)係一部有關道教修心煉性的清代道經。據經文說,斗姥元君(經中尊稱為先天斗帝,以下稱斗姥)和孚佑上帝純陽呂祖天師(以下稱呂祖)於嘉慶初(大約在三年至八年間,1798-1803)在北京一個奉祀呂祖為主神的乩壇──覺源壇上降示了這部經典。《靈妙真經疏解》起首收有一篇〈讚偈〉,云:「本壇恭逢斗帝聖誕,舉行慶祝典禮,幸蒙慈照,普被恩光,敕演《無上玄功靈妙真經》九品。」
《靈妙真經疏解》包含兩個主要的部分,「斗姥降經」(稱本經)和「呂祖疏解」(稱疏解)。本經共有九品個章節,由斗姥於九月初一日至九日,即九皇寶誕的慶祝期間,敕令紫微星君(斗姥元君的次子)降示予覺源壇弟子,目的是希望在壇弟子能夠繼承天仙派修煉金丹的傳統,並能以此真經廣化度人。至於「疏解」部分,則是出於呂祖的降示,為本經的每章內容進行梳理解釋,使經文的旨意更加清晰明白。大概而言,《靈妙真經疏解》每章一品的結構是以斗姆姥降示的經文為先,隨後就是呂祖的疏解。一改以往丹經的深邃難解,運用平實簡易的文字,強調人本來擁有尊貴的靈性,可惜被塵世中各種慾望蒙蔽,不過仍可通過自我修煉,重獲靈妙真性,並一一指出道教心性修煉而致玄通微的真正功法。例如,呂祖疏解說:「遠離慾望對於修心養性而言是非常重要的關口。因為,但凡一切日常百態和世間俗情以及各種愛慕和因緣,只要稍稍一動心,就已經是所謂的『慾』了。完全遠離慾望就能保全真性,亦能達到寂靜清和、虛無廣遠,與宇宙萬物渾然一體的玄妙之境。然而,要成仙成佛的首要關鍵處仍然在於首先從自己的身、心中尋求道的本原。」
本書白話註譯《呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經(呂祖疏解)》使用的底本為日本京都大學人文科學研究所藏的清代嘉慶《道藏輯要》,並以日本京都大谷大學圖書館藏嘉慶十年版《呂祖全書正宗》作為參考。加上全新註譯的白話版本,本書希望能為當前充斥著物慾利益、社會階層之間衝突與不和諧,以及種族和宗教紛爭的人類社會,帶來一點如經文裡裏所指出的修煉本心、求得清淨的道理。
本書為精裝甲、乙兩冊本,甲部包括註譯使用的經書版本簡介、《呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經》(清代嘉慶《道藏輯要》本)原經影印本、《呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經》常用繁體字標點本、常用繁體字與原經異體字對照表。乙部主要是白話註譯《呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經》,以便讀者將原經與白話註譯進行對照閱讀。真經貴重難得,註譯平易明晰,藏用皆宜。
Cultivating the Mind and Refining the Inner Nature: Lüzu’s Commentary on the “True Scripture of the Marvelous Wonder for the Supreme Mysterious Merit” (in Chinese)

Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing 呂祖疏解無上玄功靈妙真經 (Lüzu’s Commentary on the “True Scripture of the Marvelous Wonder for the Supreme Mysterious Merit”) is a Qing-dynasty scripture that deals with the Daoist ways of cultivating the mind and refining the inner nature. According to its text, the Dipper Mother 斗姥元君 and Lüzu 呂祖 (or Fuyou Shangdi Chunyang Lüzu 孚佑上帝純陽呂祖, to give one of his titles) descended and transmitted this scripture to the Jueyuan Altar 覺源壇, a spirit-writing altar in Beijing that mainly worshipped Lüzu, between the third and the eighth year of the Jiaqing 嘉慶 reign (i.e., 1798-1803).Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing mainly consists of two sections, namely the “Dipper Mother’s Scripture” 斗姥降經 (hereafter, the Scripture) and “Lüzu’s Commentary” 呂祖疏解 (hereafter, the Commentary). The Scripture, containing nine chapters in total, was transmitted through spirit writing by the Lord of Purple Star (Ziwei Xingjun 紫微星君) under the Dipper Mother’s (i.e., his mother’s) order, to the devotees of the Jueyuan Altar during the celebration period of the Nine Sovereigns’ Birthday 九皇寶誕. It was hoped that the devotees could carry on the Jindan 金丹 tradition of the Tianxin School 天仙派 and save the mankind through the Scripture’s teachings. The Commentary, transmitted by Lüzu also through spirit writing, provides an explanation of the text in each chapter and clarifies the meanings and purposes behind some principles.
Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing is a unique Daoist scripture written in plain and simple words, which make it stand out from former abstruse texts on Daoist alchemy. It emphasizes the noble spirit with which human beings are born, but this spirit is often clouded by all sorts of desires they breed in the mundane world. The scripture states that human beings can nevertheless restore their marvelous innate spirit through self-cultivation, and it points out various Daoist maneuvers of cultivating the mind and refining the inner nature so as to understand mysterious subtleties thoroughly.
This book, which annotates and renders Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing from classical Chinese to the modern vernacular style, is based on an edition of the Daozang jiyao (compiled in the Jiaqing period of the Qing dynasty) now stored in the Institute for Research in Humanities at Kyoto University, Japan. With the new vernacular translation and annotations, it is expected that the book will offer the readers some principles for cultivating the mind and seeking peace and quiet in human societies now overwhelmed by materialism, disharmony, conflicts and disputes among different social classes, races and religions.
This book comprises two clothbound volumes. The first volume includes an introduction to the editions of Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing this book adopts for rendering and annotation, a reproduction of the original non-punctuated Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing, a popular punctuated edition of Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing in traditional Chinese characters, and a list showing the variant Chinese characters in the original text along with their corresponding commonly used traditional characters. The second volume contains mainly the vernacular translation of and annotations to Lüzu shujie Wushang xuangong lingmiao zhenjing, which the readers can readily employ for comparison against the original text.
With the simple yet exquisite translation and clear annotations on a precious scripture that deals with the important Daoist tradition of inner alchemy, the book has much to recommend it.
