Abstract

Heritage Management in Mainland China
Since the 1980s the Chinese government has made considerable efforts to preserve and manage the tangible and intangible heritage in mainland China, including historic villages, ancient cities, and archaeological remains. To date, China has 35 World Heritage, and hundreds of thousands of national and provincial monuments and heritage properties.
Besides tourism, what are the social, political, economic, and ideological impetuses for the popularity of heritage conservation in mainland China today? As economic development and heritage preservation both demand land and other resources, can heritage sites survive in the wave of modernization and globalization in China? The government controls the conservation process and often ignores the local community’s interests and voices, so will conservation cause new social conflicts? What are the impacts of conservation upon local communities, their cultures and the local environment?
This project will investigate:
1) diverse interpretations of the cultural significance of heritage sites by different stakeholders, and the causal factors and consequences of this diversity;
2) the impact of local ecological, economic, social and political structures, as well as modernization and globalization upon the management of heritage properties, and
3) the impact of the management upon the local communities、local cultures and environments.

1)不同的利益持份團體對文化遺產重要性的多元詮釋及其原因;
2)現代化、全球化和地方生態、經濟結構、社會組織和政治架構對文化遺產保育和管理的影響;
