CUHK ranked 20th among the 100 teams chosen from a field of 7,109 teams from 1,838 universities in 88 countries competing on six continents.

The ACM programming contest is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious in the world. This year, it attracted 6,700 teams representing 1,821 universities in 83 countries. Only 100 teams will advance to the World Finals.

Prof. Patrick P.C. Lee, who won the best paper award in the ACM CoNext 2008 Conference. The work is “Opportunistic Use of Client Repeaters to Improve Performance of WLANs”.

Prof. Shengyu Zhang, who won the best paper award in ICALP. The work is “Making Classical Honest Verifier Zero Knowledge Protocols Secure against Quantum Attacks”.

Prof. Lap Chi Lau of being the “first” computer scientist to receive the CMS (Canadian Mathematical Society) Doctoral Prize. The CMS Doctoral Prize was inaugurated since 1997 to recognize outstanding performance by a doctoral student who graduated from a Canadian University.

Mr. Li XU was awarded the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship this year (2008-2009). The fellowship program is designed to empower and encourage PhD students in the Asia-Pacific region to realize their potential in computer science-related research as well as recognizing and awarding outstanding PhD students.

The paper, entitled “Domain-Specific Hybrid FPGA: Architecture and Floating-Point Applications” proposes an architecture that can achieve a 2.5 times speed and 18 times area improvement over conventional FPGA devices.

Mr. Gary Chow Chun Tak will pursue his PhD at Imperial College, London. The scholarship comprises an annual maintenance allowance, assistance towards air passage, plus tuition fees up to and including the third year of the relevant PhD studies programme.

Mr. Fan Bin has been accepted into a Ph.D. programme at Computer Science Department in Carnegie Mellon Unveristy with scholarships for full tuition fee and living expenses each month, which will be over 2 million Hong Kong dollars for five years.

The paper entitled “Fast Placement-Intact Logic Perturbation Targeting for FPGA Performance Improvement” was awarded a Celoxica Best Paper in the IEEE International SPL2007 conference.

Mr. Albert C.M. Au Yeung and Mr. Ray Kong Lam were awarded the R.C. Lee Centenary Scholarship this year. The R.C. Lee Centenary Scholarship is a very prestigious scholarship which encourages bright young men and women who are graduates of a university in Hong Kong to pursue their graduate study outside Hong Kong.

Among all the Computer Science (or Computer Science & Engineering) Departments in Hong Kong institutions, we achieved the “best performance” in the Computer Science /IT Panel. This result reflects not only our excellent performance, but also our commitment to push forward the frontier of computer science and engineering.

Mr. Jiang Wenjie received the University’s Award for the Best Research Output by Research Post-graduate Students 2005. This Award is nominated annually by each Faculty of the University to recognize research postgraduate students with commendable research achievements.

The project “Virtual Acupuncture” represented Hong Kong in the Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology Awards (APICTA) and won the “Winner Award” in the category of Research and Development.

The research paper entitled “A Statistical Evaluation Model for Minutiae-based Automatic Fingerprint Verification Systems” by Mr. Chen Jiansheng won the Second Prize of Motorola Best Student Paper in IAPR International Conference on Biometrics 2006, which is one of the most significant conferences in biometric research.

The paper, entitled “Dynamic Voltage Scaling for Commercial FPGAs”, presents a methodology to reduce the power consumption of commercial field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices.

Mr. Mak Chi Chung and Mr. Chan Chi Chun won the champion in the IEEE (Hong Kong) Computational Intelligence Chapter Final Year Project Competition. It aims to provide recognition of research efforts related in computational intelligence.

Mr. Xie Yongming won the First Award in the 9th Challenge Cup. The bi-annual Challenge Cup is considered the premier national competition of extra-curricular technological projects of university students. It pools the best young innovative brains from all corners of China.

Mr. Xie Yongming won the Gold Award in the 7th IT Excellence Awards (Post-Secondary) 2005.

The project “Salinity in the Macau Raw Water Controlling System” by Mr. Choi Chiu Wo Jeff, received a Certificated of Merit in the 7th IT Excellence Awards (Post-Secondary). The event was organized annually by the Hong Kong Computer Society.

Mr. Joe Wenjie Jiang won the Best Student Paper in the IFIP WG 7.3 International Symposium on Computer Performance, Modeling, Measurements and Evaluation with paper titled “On the Interaction of Overlay Routing”.

Students of Prof. Lyu Rung Tsong Michael of the Department received awards in three renowned competitions for their project “mVOTE Mobile Video Object Tracking Engine”.

Prof. Leung Ho Fung and Ms. Lam Ka Man won the Best Paper Award for their work entitled “Risk Strategies and Risk Strategy Equilibrium in Agent Interactions Modeled as Normal Repeated 2×2 Risk Games”. This paper introduces some new concepts, which assist the analysis of multi-agent applications and the design of intelligent agents.
