Computer Science Students Entered the World Finals of the ACM Computer Programming Contest 2008
in Achievements
The ACM programming contest is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious in the world. This year, it attracted 6,700 teams representing 1,821 universities in 83 countries. Only 100 teams will advance to the World Finals.
Prof. Patrick P.C. LEE Received the Best Paper in ACM CoNext 2008

Prof. Patrick P.C. Lee, who won the best paper award in the ACM CoNext 2008 Conference. The work is “Opportunistic Use of Client Repeaters to Improve Performance of WLANs”.
Prof. Shengyu ZHANG Received the Best Paper Award in ICALP 2008

Prof. Shengyu Zhang, who won the best paper award in ICALP. The work is “Making Classical Honest Verifier Zero Knowledge Protocols Secure against Quantum Attacks”.
Prof. Lap Chi LAU Received the CMS 2007 Doctoral Prize
in Achievements
Prof. Lap Chi Lau of being the “first” computer scientist to receive the CMS (Canadian Mathematical Society) Doctoral Prize. The CMS Doctoral Prize was inaugurated since 1997 to recognize outstanding performance by a doctoral student who graduated from a Canadian University.
CSE Student Li XU Has Received the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship Award
in Achievements
Mr. Li XU was awarded the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship this year (2008-2009). The fellowship program is designed to empower and encourage PhD students in the Asia-Pacific region to realize their potential in computer science-related research as well as recognizing and awarding outstanding PhD students.
Chun Hok Ho, Chi Wai Yu, Philip Leong, Wayne Luk and Steven Wilton Received the Stamatis Vassiliadis Award for Outstanding Paper in the International Conference on Field Programmable Logic and Applications (FPL) in Amsterdam

The paper, entitled “Domain-Specific Hybrid FPGA: Architecture and Floating-Point Applications” proposes an architecture that can achieve a 2.5 times speed and 18 times area improvement over conventional FPGA devices.
Mr. Gary Chow Chun Tak Was Awarded the Croucher Scholarship
in Achievements
Mr. Gary Chow Chun Tak will pursue his PhD at Imperial College, London. The scholarship comprises an annual maintenance allowance, assistance towards air passage, plus tuition fees up to and including the third year of the relevant PhD studies programme.
Mr. Fan Bin Received Scholarships of Over HK$2 million by Carnegie-Mellon University
in Achievements
Mr. Fan Bin has been accepted into a Ph.D. programme at Computer Science Department in Carnegie Mellon Unveristy with scholarships for full tuition fee and living expenses each month, which will be over 2 million Hong Kong dollars for five years.
