Our Programme

  • Nurture professional teachers of mathematics who are both well versed in the subject of mathematics and professionally competent in mathematics education
  • Facilitate students’ development of transferable skills related problem-solving, critical and independent thinking as well as effective communication
  • Equip students with the ability to assume leadership roles in mathematics teaching

Graduates will be awarded a Bachelor of Education Degree in Mathematics and Mathematics Education including a qualification equivalent to a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Graduates will be qualified to teach in secondary schools.

After completing the programme, students will be able to have:

  • sufficient mathematics knowledge of mathematical analysis, linear algebra, computer programming for mathematics, and further knowledge essential to teaching up to senior secondary level
  • an understanding of mathematical literacy which is considered to have desirable practical outcomes for the teaching of mathematics in both primary and secondary sectors
  • the communication and pedagogical skills expected of teachers of mathematics
  • an understanding of mathematical concepts and theories and their application in teaching mathematics
  • the ability to formulate and solve practical problems mathematically
  • the ability to critically analyse current approaches and methods in mathematics education
  • an ability to understand research topics on teaching and learning of mathematics
  • pedagogical content knowledge in teaching mathematics
  • practical skills in using textbooks and other teaching resources and evaluation of learning outcomes
  • a capability of establishing intellectual development with an emphasis on analytical and problem-solving skills
  • an appreciation of the contribution of mathematics to the formation and improvement of human society
  • an interest and an appreciation of professional values of an educator

Students are encouraged to participate different experiential learning activities to broaden their horizons and achieve an all-round development.

Micro-teaching is a method of teacher training which has been proven to help students develop their specific skills and teaching styles through designing,  implementing and reflecting on a mathematics lesson with the use of teaching aids. Micro-teaching is incorporated a series of mathematics education teaching techniques courses.

  • Students will visit different educational institutes to learn about various school settings and teachers’ responsibilities.
  • Students will be required to attach in secondary schools as regular teachers to participate in and observe classroom and school activities from perspectives of both teachers and students.

Graduates will be qualified to teach in secondary schools and will have the abilities and competence to take up leading roles in mathematics teaching. Graduates with the knowledge and skills developed in this programme may also pursue a career in a wide range of professions such as science and technology, finance and banking, civil service, publishing etc.
