Weiping WU is now Director of the Yale–China Chinese Language Centre and concurrently a guest professor in four universities in mainland China (including Shanxi Normal University). Since 1981, he has been teaching language (English and Chinese) and GE courses for undergraduates and various linguistic courses for graduate students at universities in mainland China, the United States and Hong Kong.
Weiping obtained his PhD in Linguistics in 1992 from Georgetown University. Before coming to Hong Kong in 1999, he was a Research Associate at the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, D.C. and the Director of its Chinese Language Testing Program. While in the US, he served as the founding General Secretary of Sun Yet-sen University Alumni Association in Greater Washington, and the founding editor for its newsletter Kangleyuan in Greater Washington. In his professional field, he served as an Expert Witness in Linguistics for the US Department of Justice, as a professional consultant in assessment for many organizations including the UN and the US National Center for State Courts. His research interests in recent years in Hong Kong include language and the law and various areas in language assessment, especially the standardization of oral proficiency tests and Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) testing. He also provides consulting services at the invitation of various government departments (e.g. the Education Bureau and the Central Policy Unit of the HKSAR Government), as well as professional and educational institutions (e.g. HKEAA, VTC and various international schools in Hong Kong).
