Why CUHK Physics?

The physics curriculum at CUHK has a tradition of providing a rigorous and all-round training to students. Coupled with learning opportunities provided through departmental programs such as the Mentorship program, Summer Undergraduate Research Exchange (SURE), Summer Teacher AppRenticeship (STAR), Overseas Program for Undergraduate Student (OPUS), departmental summer internships, final year research projects, etc., our curriculum gives a thorough training to undergraduates at a level comparable to any major research universities in the world.

Learning opportunities are further provided through the flexible credit system at CUHK. Physics undergraduates at CUHK take advantage of the system by taking courses in mathematics, computer science, and engineering departments. In fact, about 50% of our students graduate with a minor subject. The popular minors among recent graduates are Mathematics (about 43%) and Computer Science (about 18%). The flexible minor system at CUHK allows our students to learn useful skills for their major subjects as well as to enhance their career prospects.

To arouse the spirit of continuously striving for excellence among our students, the Department has set up Physics Prizes in the form of scholarships for undergraduates. The Prizes are supported by the Departmental CN Yang Visiting Professorship Fund, which was set up in honour of our Distinguished Professor-at-large, Prof. C.N. Yang. Quality Year 1 students may compete for the prize based on their scores in open examinations and their academic performance in Year 1. The number of prizes for Year 1 students may vary, with a determining factor based on the performance of the students.

In recent years, nearly 50% of graduates pursue further studies in local institutions or universities worldwide. Our graduates have performed consistently well in the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), which is required for applying for admission and studentship to pursue a PhD degree in universities in the US. Graduates from CUHK are highly competitive at the international standard and have been admitted to top PhD programs in the US and UK. In CUHK-Physics, we expect our students to work hard and meet the challenges. We welcome you to join us and march on with our tradition. In recent years, CUHK Physics graduates received admission offers from the physics graduate programs of the following universities:

Asia

Europe

US & Canada
